AI VISIBILITY INDEX

The NFL AI Endorsement Index 2026: Who AI Names First

Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Travis Kelce capture the largest share of endorsement-intent AI answers among 50 NFL players tested by 5W and Talent Resources ahead of the 2026 season opener on September 9. The top five players account for 61% of all citations tested, while 30 of the 50 players score in the lowest tier.

Which NFL players do AI engines name first for endorsements?

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity treat a small group of players as default answers to sponsor-facing prompts such as "which NFL player should a brand sign for a 2026 campaign." Patrick Mahomes leads the field with a Citation Share Score of 97, followed by Josh Allen at 94 and Travis Kelce at 91. Two players from the reigning Super Bowl LX champion Seattle Seahawks, quarterback Sam Darnold and running back Kenneth Walker III, round out the top five at 89 and 87.

Why does the kickoff rematch lift four players and skip two?

Six players from the two teams meeting in the NFL's September 9 season-opening rematch of Super Bowl LX appear in this Index: Sam Darnold, Kenneth Walker III and Cooper Kupp from Seattle, and Drake Maye and Christian Gonzalez from New England, plus Seattle kicker Jason Myers. Four of the six, Darnold, Walker, Kupp and Maye, crack the top eleven.

Gonzalez, the Patriots cornerback who forced two turnovers in that Super Bowl, scores a 57. Myers, who converted five field goals, a Super Bowl record, in the same game, scores only a 12, the lowest mark in the top 25. Super Bowl LX drew 124.9 million U.S. viewers and a 70,823 attendance at Levi's Stadium on February 8, 2026, according to the official Super Bowl LX record.

Why it works: The pattern is consistent with how generative engines weight recent, widely covered events alongside career-long fame. A February 2026 Super Bowl appearance, covered by NFL.com and wire services within the retrieval windows most AI engines draw from, is the most likely explanation for the citation advantage Darnold, Walker, Kupp and Maye show over players with comparable career statistics but no recent title-game coverage, a pattern 5W and Talent Resources first measured in the In Tune With AI athlete research published in May 2026.

How many NFL players score in the lowest AI visibility tier?

Thirty of the 50 players tested land in the Recoverable tier, the lowest of the four tiers used across the 5W AI Visibility Index series. The top five players tested, Mahomes, Allen, Kelce, Darnold and Walker, capture 61% of all endorsement-intent citations across the same 50-player pool.

This mirrors the concentration 5W found at the franchise level in the NFL Citation Share Index 2026, which measured five NFL franchises, the Jets, Saints, Colts, Cardinals and Vikings, at a Citation Share Score of zero across 750 queries despite a combined enterprise value exceeding $28 billion, according to that May 2026 report.

How often do AI engines cite the wrong NFL sponsor deal?

Across the 50-player prompt set, 17% of AI-generated answers named a sponsor relationship that had expired, been renegotiated to a different brand, or never existed. That rate sits between the 18% fabrication rate 5W and Talent Resources measured in the Celebrity Endorsement Index and the 22% rate measured for beauty-category endorsements, both published in 2026.

Why it works: Large language models generate the statistically likely continuation of a sponsor-athlete pairing based on training data that may predate a contract's expiration or renegotiation. Without a dated, structured update to a player's public sponsor record, the model has no signal that the pairing has changed, so it keeps citing the old deal.

What does Talent Resources' Dunkin' campaign show about this shift?

Talent Resources executed Dunkin's negotiations with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez for Dunkin's first-ever Super Bowl commercial in 2023. Dunkin' has run a Ben Affleck-led Super Bowl campaign every year since, through Super Bowl LX in February 2026.

"Brands come to us looking for the right celebrity or athlete to make them relevant, not just recognizable. We put Ben Affleck behind the drive-thru window for Dunkin's first-ever Super Bowl commercial, and Dunkin' has been one of the most talked-about brands in the game every year since. This Index shows the same standard now applies to AI: being liked by fans is not enough if the AI engine a brand's marketing team is using does not name you as the answer," said Mike Heller, Founder and CEO of Talent Resources.

What is the 5W and Talent Resources scoring methodology?

Each of the 50 players was scored across four weighted dimensions: AI Recognition (30%), Association Sentiment (25%), Engagement Depth (25%) and Cross-Engine Consistency (20%), the same weighting Talent Resources and 5W applied to the In Tune With AI athlete research published in May 2026 and the Creator Documentation Index published in June 2026. Prompts were run across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity between August 18 and August 24, 2026, using standardized sponsor-facing and fan-facing query sets.

AI Recognition measures whether an engine names the player unprompted in response to a category query. Association Sentiment measures whether the surrounding language is commercially favorable, neutral or negative. Engagement Depth measures whether the engine cites specific deals, statistics or storylines rather than a bare name. Cross-Engine Consistency measures how many of the four engines return the same player for the same prompt.

Why does endorsement visibility matter before kickoff?

Brands and agencies now build athlete endorsement shortlists using the same generative engines consumers use for research, so a player absent from AI answers is absent from a growing share of informal due diligence before a deal ever reaches a negotiating table. The NFL Owners Reputation Index 2026 found a 44-point spread in how AI systems render the league's 32 principal owners, and this Index finds a similar spread at the player level, concentrated even more tightly among a handful of names.

Agencies that document a player's sponsor history, statistics and charitable work in structured, citable formats give AI engines a dated record to retrieve instead of a gap the model fills with a statistically likely guess. That gap is where the 17% fabrication rate in this Index originates.

5W runs GEO programs for professional athletes and the brands that sponsor them, building the documented, structured record that keeps AI engines citing a deal correctly through the season it is signed. 5W runs AI Search (GEO) programs for brands across consumer, B2B, financial services, healthcare, and technology — building the machine-readable footprint that gets brands cited, not just ranked.
