A data drop is the strategic release of original research — proprietary survey data, analysis, index results, or new research findings — designed to attract media coverage and position an organization as a category authority. Unlike a product announcement or corporate news, a data drop centers the research itself as the newsworthy element.

The mechanics: An organization commissions or conducts original research (a survey, analysis, index, study). Before public release, the research is embargoed to a select list of journalists who cover the category. The embargo gives those journalists exclusive access for a defined period (typically 24-48 hours), allowing them to break the story before public release. When the embargo lifts, the organization publishes the research, often accompanied by press release, social amplification, and media outreach.

Data drops generate earned media because journalists need content — and original data is highly coverable. A survey showing consumer behavior shift, a market analysis revealing category trends, or competitive ranking data attracts journalists who can build stories around the findings.
