A social crisis is a reputational event that originates on, or is primarily amplified through, social media platforms. It moves from a single post or thread to viral status to mainstream media coverage in hours — sometimes minutes.

Common Triggers

A customer complaint goes viral. An employee posts an internal memo. A tone-deaf brand post lands wrong. An executive is caught on video. A product fails publicly. A competitor or activist launches a coordinated campaign. A resurfaced old post creates a new narrative.

Speed

Social crises move at platform speed, not news-cycle speed. By the time a traditional crisis team convenes a conference call, the hashtag is trending. Response plans must include pre-approved holding statements, designated social-response leads with authority to post, and real-time monitoring during business and non-business hours.

Containment vs. Amplification

Not every negative post is a crisis. The first decision is whether to respond (which may amplify) or monitor (which may let it fade). A response from the brand's official account signals that the issue is significant — which can escalate a minor complaint into a major story. The decision framework: Is this reaching people who matter to our business? Is it factually wrong? Will it spread without a response?

Connection to AI

Social crises generate the kind of high-volume, high-engagement content that AI engines ingest and retrieve. A viral negative thread can become a permanent part of what ChatGPT or Perplexity says about a brand. Crisis response in the AI era must account for the long-tail retrieval impact, not just the 48-hour news cycle.
