28 DC PREP SCHOOLS SCORE BELOW 77 ON AI: ONLY SIDWELL AND GDS PASS
Share:

We scored 30 private schools across the Washington DC metro on AI curriculum depth. The results are not close.

Sidwell Friends ranks #1 with an AI Index of 88.4. Georgetown Day School ranks #2 at 84.2. Those are the only two schools in this 30-school universe that earn Tier A — the threshold for a named, structured, multi-year AI curriculum commitment.

The other 28 schools score below 77. Twelve score below 60. Zero teach Generative Engine Optimization.

The Washington DC Private School AI Curriculum Index 2026 is the first study to measure whether the capital's most expensive prep schools are actually teaching AI — or still running the 2018 STEM playbook with a new brochure. The framework scores five dimensions: Curriculum Depth, Specificity, Integration, Recency, and Partnerships.

Sidwell & GDS Are Operating in a Different Category

DC's private school tradition is classical — Latin, rhetoric, philosophy, college-prep in the Ivy League mold. That tradition produces extraordinary admissions outcomes. It is not oriented toward AI as a named discipline.

The schools that score highest — Sidwell Friends and Georgetown Day School — are progressive-model schools. They integrate technology across disciplines rather than siloing it in a CS department. The classical schools — St. Albans (76.8), Georgetown Prep (68.4), Landon (66.8) — score well on academic quality but lower on AI specificity. They teach computer science. They don't always name AI.

The structural irony: the metro area with the most AI policy infrastructure in the world — DARPA, NSF, the White House AI office, Georgetown CSET — produces prep school graduates who understand AI governance better than AI engineering.

Complete Rankings: Tiers A, B, and C

Tier A (≥ 80): Sidwell Friends (88.4), Georgetown Day School (84.2)

Tier B (60–79.9): St. Albans (76.8), Bullis (75.2), National Cathedral (74.6), Flint Hill (72.4), Potomac School (70.8), Maret (69.2), Georgetown Prep (68.4), St. Stephen's & St. Agnes (67.6), Landon (66.8), Holton-Arms (65.6), Washington International (64.2), Episcopal High (63.0), Madeira (62.4), Sandy Spring Friends (61.0), Connelly Holy Child (60.4), Stone Ridge (60.2)

Tier C (40–59.9): Georgetown Visitation (58.6), Gonzaga (57.2), The Field School (55.8), BASIS McLean (55.4), The Heights (54.2), Bishop Ireton (52.8), DeMatha (51.6), Paul VI (51.0), Good Counsel (50.2), Oakcrest (48.8), Pallotti (46.4), St. John's College High (45.8)

Bullis Is Closing the Gap Faster Than Anyone

Bullis School in Potomac posts the highest Recency score (78) in Tier B — meaning its AI investment is more recent and more aggressive than schools that outrank it on other dimensions. The gap to Tier A is 9.0 points — closeable in one to two academic cycles with a named AI program and formalized partnerships.

Flint Hill (72.4) and National Cathedral (74.6) are the other standouts in Tier B. Both show investment in curriculum freshness and faculty development. Neither has yet formalized the academic naming or external partnerships that lock Sidwell and Georgetown Day into Tier A.

Three Moves Separate Tier B from Tier A

The gap between Tier B and Tier A is not budget. It is naming. Three moves close it:

1. Replace "technology" and "innovation" with "artificial intelligence" in course titles.

2. Hire an AI-specific faculty role.

3. Formalize a university or industry AI partnership.

One academic cycle. All three moves are standard at Sidwell Friends and Georgetown Day School. None are present at most Tier B schools.

The Price Question: $22,000–$62,000 for What Economy?

Tuition at these schools ranges from $22,000 to $62,000. The question the index asks: at that price point, are families buying preparation for the AI economy — or preparation for the economy that existed before it?
