Tampa and Miami PR Agency: How 5W Gets Brands Recommended by AI

Nearly half of US adults, 45%, used an AI model to find a local business in the past year. A year earlier, that number was 6%, according to the BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026. For brands operating or opening in Tampa or Miami, a reputation built in New York doesn't carry over. Our local research explains how AI models weigh local media when making certain recommendations.

5W Public Relations (5W) is headquartered in New York City and opened offices in Tampa and Miami over the last few years. Along with traditional public relations services, we have a dedicated practice to optimize communication strategies and content for ChatGPT, Claude, and Google’s AI Overviews and answers, which are rapidly becoming the default search options for users looking to discover new products and services.

How does an AI model recognize and recommend a brand in Tampa or Miami?

When someone asks ChatGPT for a business in a particular city, AI models retrieve web pages that mention the city and type of business, then write a short answer recommending a handful of companies they deem relevant to the user's search request (aka prompt).

Muck Rack studied more than 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini in May 2026 and found that 84% came from news coverage, government and university sources, reference sites, and other third-party pages. Paid ads and sponsored content accounted for 0.3%.

That’s one reason a big national name won’t automatically lead to a recommendation for a user in Miami. If someone in Brickell asks Gemini for a public relations (PR) firm in Miami, the model isn’t reading a firm's New York press clips. It is reading the Miami Herald, the South Florida Business Journal, chamber of commerce directories, event listings, and review sites. Brands that secure local coverage gain recognition in model responses, often outpacing national competitors that lack regional presence.

Why Is Public Relations So Important in Tampa and Miami?

Miami and Tampa are growing rapidly. Miami had about 490,000 residents as of July 2025, up roughly 11% since 2020, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Tampa passed 400,000 residents over the same time frame. These new residents are often unfamiliar with local businesses and turn to online search and social media for options.

Users increasingly rely on AI recommendations from ChatGPT or Google, and research shows that many act on them. BrightLocal found that 92% of consumers pay attention to AI-shared ratings when picking a business, and 74% want to see reviews from the last three months. Unlike traditional search engines that provide links, AI models share summarized answers from recent information, requiring brands to update their top-performing content quarterly to keep AI recommendations consistent.

Where do AI models find information to share about a Miami or Tampa business?

AI models lean on five main sources to find information about a local business.

Where the tool looksWhat it learns thereTampa and Miami examples

Local news coverage

Identify local, relevant reports, and the specific journalists covering a beat

Tampa Bay Times, Tampa Bay Business Journal, Miami Herald, South Florida Business Journal

Business listings & customer reviews

Critical details like address, operating hours, core category, ratings, and recent customer feedback

Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Yelp, industry directories

Memberships & industry awards

Which trusted local organizations and industry bodies back local businesses?

Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, The PR Net 100

Your official company website

Core facts: dedicated office pages detailing local addresses, key team members, and offered services

A dedicated Tampa page and a dedicated Miami page

Events & speaking engagements

Credible information that your team actively shows up and contributes in the local community

Regional business conferences, university panels, association meetings

AI models do not weigh all five sources equally. A recent study found that questions about industry trends pull from news coverage at more than twice the rate of "how do I" questions, and that press releases appear 3.5 times more often in trend answers than in "best of" lists. A PR firm hoping to be recognized as a top agency in Tampa needs credible listings, reviews, and memberships nearly as much as it needs press.

How long does local public relations coverage in Florida continue to work?

Not as long as most people think. More than half of the news articles in AI citations were published within the last 12 months, and the odds of an article being cited drop six months after publication, according to a recent Muck Rack study. A grand-opening announcement is unlikely to keep a company in an AI answer rotation a year later.

Brands should provide a steady stream of mentions tied to local cities: a quote in a local business story every quarter, new customer reviews every month, and fresh, relevant earned and owned media. When a brand's content grows stale, the model’s retrieval does too, and a competitor with updated coverage takes its place.

How does 5W help Tampa and Miami businesses get recommended in AI search?

At 5W, we approach AI visibility as an integrated service into regional PR programs. The PR Net's 2026 Top 100 Awards profile of 5W called out both our Tampa and Miami expansion and this approach. In practice, that means working through these five steps for local coverage.

In our partnership with Profound, we monitor visibility with ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude, note what sources each model retrieves and recommends, and compare them against existing information. The differences help guide our internal and client strategies.

These and similar fundamentals that earned 5W a spot on The PR Net 100 haven’t changed our core work: know your audience, have a topic worth discussing, show up everywhere that matters, and measure results. AI hasn’t replaced any of our core functions; instead, it’s added a new non-human "reader."

A brand builds its AI visibility through local coverage, listings, and mentions, but that material fades fast unless it keeps coming. The five steps above gives brands a path to build on and maintain.
