Technology PR in the Age of AI: What Changes Now

how technology pr ai is changing communication strategies explained
Share:

Half of B2B software buyers, 51%, now start their research in an AI chatbot rather than Google, up from 29% just eleven months earlier, according to G2's 2026 Answer Economy report. A technology PR program that only measures reporters and readers is measuring half the audience that now decides whether a brand makes it onto a buyer's shortlist.

5W Public Relations (5W) runs a dedicated Technology PR practice that has added Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) as a core capability rather than a separate service line, because a technology brand's traditional press coverage and its visibility inside ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews are now built from the same material.

How Has AI Search Changed What Technology PR Has to Do?

The job hasn't changed: find the story, get it placed with a credible reporter, put it in front of the right people. What changed is that a second reader now decides whether that placement ever reaches the buyer. Muck Rack's Generative Pulse team analyzed more than 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini in its May 2026 study and found that earned media accounted for 84% of all citations; journalism alone made up 27%. Paid, or advertorial, content accounted for just 0.3%.

A press release a technology company writes about its own launch and a reporter's independent story about that same launch come from the same PR effort. Still, an AI model reads them completely differently: it treats the press release as brand-authored and largely uncitable, while it treats the reporter's write-up of the same news as exactly the kind of independent source worth citing. The tactic didn't change. What counts as proof to a machine did.

Why Does This Matter for Technology Buyers Specifically?

Nearly three in four B2B software buyers, 72%, now consult ChatGPT at some point while evaluating a vendor, according to Forrester's 2026 B2B Buyer Journey research reported by MarketScale.

G2's same 2026 research found that 69% of buyers chose a different software vendor than they had originally planned, based on what an AI chatbot told them, and a third bought from a vendor they had never heard of before the AI surfaced it. Review site citations, per G2, are the single strongest signal that makes a buyer trust an AI chatbot's recommendation, ahead of the vendor's own website.

What Does Technology PR Add in an AI Search Environment?

None of the tasks below are new. What changes is the second column: what a technology PR team now also has to build into each one.

PR taskBefore AI searchWhat's added now

Media relations

Pitch a reporter for placement and reach

Same pitch, plus a structured summary the outlet's page can be extracted from

Analyst relations

Brief Gartner or Forrester for a print report

Same briefing, now also a source those models retrieve and cite directly

Press releases

Announce the news once, on launch day

Same release, restructured with clear FAQ and comparison language for extraction

Measurement

Track press clip count and share of voice

Add a recurring citation-share check across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini

Cadence

One push around the news cycle, then quiet

A steady quarterly refresh so citations don't age out

A Gartner briefing, a TechCrunch story, and an analyst quote still matter exactly as much as they did before. The added column is what makes sure a model can actually find and cite them.

How Long Does a Technology PR Placement Keep Working in AI Answers?

Not indefinitely. The same Muck Rack research found that more than half of the articles AI models cite were published within the last 12 months, and the odds of an older story getting cited drop sharply after six months. A funding announcement or launch story from 18 months ago is unlikely to keep a startup inside an AI model's answer to "best vendors in this category" today.

That means a technology PR calendar needs a steadier drumbeat than a single launch push: a fresh placement or an updated comparison page every quarter, not silence until the next funding round.

How Does 5WPR Build AI-Ready Technology PR?

5W treats AI visibility as an added capability inside its technology PR programs, not a separate offering clients have to buy twice. The PR Net's 2026 Top 100 recognition of 5W specifically called out this integrated approach.

In practice, that means monitoring how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude currently describe a client's product category, in partnership with the AI-monitoring platform Profound; comparing what each model retrieves against the client's own site, reviews, and press; closing the gaps with earned media, updated listings, and fresh owned content; and rechecking the same models on a fixed schedule rather than once after a launch.

5WPR runs this through its Technology PR practice and a standalone AI Citation Source Audit that shows a technology client exactly which sources ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini are already pulling from, and which competitors are winning the citation instead.

None of this makes traditional technology PR tactics obsolete. The job is still to find the story, get it placed with a credible reporter, and make sure the right people see it. What's added is a second reader that now sits between every press hit and the buyer who eventually sees it, and building for that reader is part of the technology PR job now, not a separate one.

CONCLUSION

A technology PR program built only for the reporter, and not for the model reading the reporter's story afterward, is optimizing for half the audience that now decides a vendor shortlist. 5WPR's Technology PR practice pairs earned media with the GEO work that gets technology brands named inside an AI answer.
