Agent Conversion Rate
An entry in The GEO Lexicon, published by 5W.
Agent conversion rate is the share of shopping interactions started by an AI agent, such as a shopping assistant acting for a person, that end in a completed purchase. It separates agent-driven shopping from ordinary human web traffic. Because agent shopping is new, there is no standard definition or reliable benchmark, and the data a brand can collect depends on the platforms and protocols involved.
How does agent shopping differ from human shopping?
An agent may research, compare and sometimes buy on a person's behalf, so the path differs from a human browsing a site. The table lists differences that are commonly described. They vary by platform, and the details are changing.
| Feature | Human shopper | Agent-assisted shopper |
|---|---|---|
| How products are found | Search, ads, browsing, social | The agent queries product data and sources, and recommends options |
| What is read | Pages, images and reviews | Product data feeds, structured data, page text and reviews |
| Decision | The person decides on the site | The agent narrows choices, and the person may confirm in the agent or on the site |
| Checkout | The brand's own checkout | The brand's checkout, or one run inside the agent through a supported protocol |
| Data seen by the brand | Site analytics | Often less, because part of the journey happens outside the brand's site |
How can a brand measure it?
Measuring is harder than for ordinary conversion, because agent traffic is not always labeled. Approaches include:
- Identify agent-originated sessions where possible, using server logs, user-agent strings, referrers and the identifiers that agent platforms provide.
- Tag orders that arrive through agent checkout programs or protocols, if the brand participates.
- Divide completed purchases from those sources by their qualifying interactions, such as product page views or product data requests.
- Track human and agent figures separately, and keep the definitions fixed.
- Note the gaps. Many agent-influenced sales are recorded as direct or unattributed. See agent attribution and attribution gap.
Illustrative calculation (example only)
- Agent-originated product interactions in a month: 2,000
- Completed purchases from those interactions: 40
- Agent conversion rate: 2.0%
- Caution: made-up numbers, and the definition of an interaction must be stated
What can influence the rate?
Conversion depends on what the agent can read and do. Common factors are:
- Accurate, complete product data, including price, stock, size, shipping and returns. See structured data.
- Reliable availability and price, since an agent may drop a product with errors.
- Clear policies for returns and support, in plain text.
- A checkout that works without friction, and support for the agent checkout options the brand chooses to join. See agentic checkout and instant checkout.
- Reviews and independent sources that agents may read.
- Being found in the first place. See agent discovery and recommendation rate.
What are the limits?
Agent shopping is changing quickly. Platforms, protocols and programs differ by market and time, so check each platform's current rules before building a measurement plan. Volumes may be small, which makes the rate unstable, and some of the journey is invisible to the brand. Do not compare the figure with human conversion without noting the different definitions, and do not rely on published benchmarks unless the method is clear. No outcome is guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
What is agent conversion rate?
It is the share of agent-initiated shopping interactions that end in a completed purchase.
How is it different from normal conversion rate?
Normal conversion rate counts visitors who buy on the brand's site. Agent conversion rate counts interactions started by an agent, which have a different path, different data and a different decision-maker.
Can brands see agent traffic in analytics?
Sometimes. Some agents identify themselves, and others are hard to tell from human visits, so data is often partial.
What is a good agent conversion rate?
There is no reliable benchmark yet. Track your own rate over time, and compare only like with like.
Should every brand measure it now?
Brands with meaningful agent traffic or planned agent checkout should. Others can start with product data quality and basic logging.
