A social calendar is a planning document that maps out scheduled social media content across platforms — what will be posted, where, when, and by whom. It is the operational backbone of a disciplined social program.

What It Includes

Post date and time, platform, content format (text, image, video, carousel, story), copy, hashtags, links, media assets, approval status, and assigned owner. Advanced calendars also include campaign tagging, paid-boost flags, and performance benchmarks.

Planning Horizon

Most teams plan 2–4 weeks ahead for evergreen and planned content, while leaving 20–30% of calendar capacity open for reactive content — newsjacking, trending-topic commentary, and real-time engagement. A fully pre-planned calendar is too rigid; a fully reactive approach lacks consistency.

Tools

Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Later, Buffer, Sprinklr, and native platform scheduling tools (Meta Business Suite, LinkedIn's scheduling feature). Enterprise teams often use project management tools like Asana or Monday alongside dedicated social scheduling platforms.

Coordination with PR

The social calendar should sync with the PR calendar — embargo lifts, press release distribution, media tour dates, event timelines, and campaign launches. When earned media lands, the social team should be ready to amplify it the same day with pre-prepared or rapid-response social content.
