An abundance of recent data shows that AI answers help drive retail sales. During Prime Day in June 2026, AI traffic to U.S. retail sites rose 89% year over year, according to Adobe's Prime Day 2026 report. Those visitors converted 40% higher than visitors arriving from paid search, email, and social.
5WPR analyzed 604 Prime Day queries in DataForSEO's ChatGPT database. None of those answers cited a brand's website, and Amazon's newsroom sourced 50% of the model's answers. Brands looking to increase AI recommendations ahead of Prime Day 2027 have to set a strategy well in advance. Historically, Prime Days occur in late June to mid-July, with a fall event in early October. In 2026, the June 3 announcement set the sale for June 23 to 26, which left brands about three weeks to prepare.
What do people ask ChatGPT about Prime Day?
When a user asks ChatGPT about Prime Day discounts, many of ChatGPT's answers come from a deal site (see the table below), Reddit, or its training data. Of the branded answers we reviewed, ChatGPT cited Tom's Guide, 9to5Toys, Esquire, Engadget, and Reddit, notably ignoring branded information.
The answers without sources and appearing in OpenAI’s training data are more revealing. "Does YETI do Prime Day?", it said YETI "typically participates," and didn’t verify either way. An answer about Sonos went further and recommended older models like the Sonos One. A lesson for brands: if sale information is missing or inaccessible to LLMs, ChatGPT often relies on memory and fills the gap itself.

Which sources does ChatGPT cite for Prime Day answers?
ChatGPT cited Amazon's newsroom, Reddit, and a short list of editorials for most of the Prime Day answers in our dataset. Out of 604 answers, 429 cited at least one source, and the same few sites kept appearing.
The sources changed with consumer suspicion.
As noted above, the most-asked question in our data was "Is stuff actually cheaper on Prime Day?" with an estimated 395 monthly AI searches. For the 70 queries about the reality of Prime Day discounts, Reddit's share of answers rose from 15% to 25%, as skeptical shoppers use the community to validate discounts.
How can brands replicate Amazon’s Newsroom strategy to get better results?
Amazon's newsroom publishes an up-to-date FAQ page answering common questions, which likely accounts for its 50% share of AI answers. The most-cited Amazon page in the 5WPR analysis has a web address ending in "when-is-amazon-prime-day," and it appeared in 35 answers. Amazon's Prime Day 2026 date page followed up with 30, answering the same question for a specific year.
Amazon's September 15, 2026, Prime Big Deal Days announcement doesn’t pack every detail into a release; it links to a concise FAQ and to an additional page titled "Can you shop Prime Big Deal Days without being a Prime member?" The release quotes Carmen Nestares, Amazon's vice president of North America Marketing and Prime Tech. Smaller brands don’t need a newsroom or Amazon’s scale to release similar information.
ChatGPT’s retrieval process often breaks a prompt into multiple web searches and then crawls the web for information that matches those searches. The second most popular query in our data was "Amazon Prime Day discounts and real price history analysis." In nearly every answer to that and similar prompts, ChatGPT matched the price-history page on Amazon.
What PR work helps brands increase their presence in ChatGPT's Prime Day answers?
Three PR workstreams align with the media sources from this data: brand messaging, editor relationships, and a brand’s presence in online communities. PR work consistently maintains programs across all three, so the change is less about new work than integrating and compounding existing information to target editorials and LLM queries around Prime Day.

Prime Day guides are popular editorials leading up to sale day. NBC News Select's October Prime Day guide went live in September 2026. Recent NBC News, Tom's Guide, and TechRadar appeared in 47, 44, and 38 answers, respectively.
A spokesperson with price data opens a fourth source that’s well suited for PR work. Each Prime Day news cycle has reporters writing stories asking if Prime Day is worth it, and they need someone who can answer with evidence. Today, an executive who publishes and compares a discount to their product's 90-day average is a potential AI citation. Our Consumer PR programs help brands develop and publish these briefs.
Outside experts can supply that evidence, too. In the 5W's Prime Day program, experts vouched for client products, giving editors an additional reason to publish our clients. Laifen earned 76 placements and over 3.99 billion impressions, including placements in Glamour, the New York Post, Marie Claire, USA Today, and Who What Wear.
When should brands start preparing for Prime Day 2027?
Brands should start prepping for Prime Day 2027 now. Our data shows queries like "How long is October Prime Day?" beginning on January 14, 2026, nine months before the sale, and older pages can serve double duty. 32 answers in a 2026 search cited Amazon’s 2025 sale page.
Editors also watch the clock. The “best deals” roundups and expert-vetted gift guides close their lists early, so 5W monitors editorial calendars throughout the lead-up to Prime Day.

5WPR's AI citation source audit helps brands identify the queries and sources for relevant AI answers and the competitors the models may cite instead. We’ve found that these mechanisms show up outside Prime Day. Here are some examples: Brooks outran Nike in AI search, and earned media drives AI citations. In each case, a brand without citable pages can be eliminated before a consumer considers it.
This year's Prime Deal Days begin on October 6 and 7, giving brands a chance to set a baseline for their visibility in AI answers for Prime Day queries and other revenue-driving topics like Black Friday. 5WPR helps clients create and monitor that baseline so they can prepare effective campaigns for future sales that appeal to customers and machines.
