FLORIDA — 5W AI Communications, the AI Communications Firm, today published the AI Platform Citation Source Index 2026 — the first consolidated ranking of the fifty websites that ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews cite most when they build an answer.
The Index synthesizes six independent citation-tracking studies covering more than 680 million individual citations between August 2024 and April 2026. It is the largest dataset of AI citation behavior ever assembled.
Key findings
Fifteen domains capture 68% of every AI citation produced. Reddit alone accounts for roughly 40% of multi-engine aggregate citation frequency — making it the single most-cited source across every major AI engine. The concentration is more extreme than Google PageRank ever produced.
The top ten most-cited websites in AI answers: Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube, LinkedIn, Forbes, Amazon, Business Insider, TechRadar, Reuters, and The New York Times.
Every engine cites differently. ChatGPT relies heavily on Wikipedia (26–48% of top-10 share), Forbes, and Business Insider. Claude weights long-form editorial — NYT, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, The Economist. Gemini routes through YouTube and Google properties. Perplexity pulls from Reddit, NIH, and primary sources. Google AI Overviews synthesizes Reddit and YouTube on top of search results.
Citation patterns are volatile within single months. ChatGPT's Reddit citation share dropped from roughly 60% to 10% between August and September 2025 — a 50-point swing inside six weeks. Forbes' ChatGPT citation share roughly doubled over the same window. PR Newswire became a direct input to the ChatGPT retrieval layer. No prior distribution regime has exhibited this level of volatility.
User-generated content dominates. Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Quora, Stack Overflow, and Facebook collectively dwarf the combined citation share of the top 20 journalism outlets for non-breaking queries. Journalism accounts for 27% of all citations — rising to 49% on time-sensitive queries — but communities dominate the evergreen answers that drive buyer decisions.
What this means for brands
More than a third of consumers now begin product research inside an AI engine rather than Google. The AI Platform Citation Source Index maps where those answers come from — and which sources brands must be present across to appear in the answer.
"The question is no longer whether you rank on Google," said Ronn Torossian, founder and chairman of 5W AI Communications. "The question is whether you appear in the answer the AI engine gives when someone asks the question that should belong to you. Citation share is the new market share."
The Index introduces a seven-step operating checklist for auditing and building brand presence across the top fifteen citation sources, alongside engine-by-engine breakdowns and a source-category analysis covering community, encyclopedic, video, professional, editorial, and commerce domains.
