5W Releases CPG Citation Index 2026: The Study Unilever Never Wanted

Unilever owns $50 billion in annual revenue. Vaseline (8%), Lipton (12%), Hellmann's (8%), Suavitel (0%)—disappear inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews.

Only Dove (68%) breaks through.

Yesterday, 5W released the flagship CPG Citation Index 2026—a full audit of 75 product queries across 5 AI engines (375 total responses) measuring which brands appear in generative search recommendations, why, and what that means for CPG strategy.

The Headline Finding

Scale is dead. Heritage is invisible. Retail shelf space doesn't exist inside AI.

What works instead: dermatology positioning, Amazon review infrastructure, Reddit community sponsorships, YouTube creator partnerships, and portfolio breadth.

By the Numbers

Neutrogena (85%): Dermatology positioning = highest visibility in skincare across all 5 engines.

Maybelline (80%): L'Oréal's mass-market play owns makeup discovery.

Celsius (75%): DTC startup beats Gatorade (60%) through Reddit + YouTube + Amazon infrastructure. Not market dominance.

Dove (68%): Unilever's only winner. Same parent as Vaseline (8%). Same company, different positioning = completely different AI visibility.

L'Oréal: Only competitor owning mass (Maybelline 80%), mid (L'Oréal 75%), and prestige (Urban Decay 70%) simultaneously. Portfolio breadth = moat.

Health & Wellness: Wide open. No brand exceeds 70%. Lowest competitive barriers for new entrants. DTC and traditional players compete on equal footing.

Why This Matters

40% of consumers now begin product research inside ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews. That means citation share—not market share—drives brand discovery.

Unilever spent decades optimizing for retail shelf space. Perfect move for 1980–2020. Devastating move for 2020+.

Dove proves Unilever can win—it positioned around dermatology authority decades ago, and that positioning shows up inside every AI engine. Vaseline, Lipton, Hellmann's did not. Different strategic choices. Same parent company. Completely different results.

For CPG CMOs: This is the audit you need to see. It maps which visibility playbooks work (and which don't) across five different AI engines and nine different visibility drivers (clinical positioning, portfolio breadth, Amazon reviews, Reddit sponsorship, YouTube partnerships, retail editorial, brand heritage, search query specificity, and community infrastructure).

What Happens Next

This is the first of a CPG Citation Index series. Upcoming audits: Beauty, Food, Home Care, Health & Wellness, Personal Care as standalone reports.

We measured which brands appear. Future studies will measure which brands convert (sales impact), persist (algorithm stability), and command premium pricing (downstream ROI).

For now: Read the full CPG Citation Index 2026. All methodology, all data, all limitations disclosed.
