5W and Talent Resources Launch NFL AI Endorsement Study

5W AI Communications and Talent Resources launched the NFL AI Endorsement Index 2026 on August 26, scoring 50 NFL players on how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity answer sponsor-facing questions ahead of the September 9 season opener. Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Travis Kelce lead the field.

What did the NFL AI Endorsement Index 2026 find?

The Index found that five players, Mahomes, Allen, Kelce, Sam Darnold and Kenneth Walker III, capture 61% of all endorsement-intent AI citations across the 50-player pool tested. Thirty of the 50 players score in the lowest of four AI visibility tiers, and 17% of AI-generated answers named a sponsor relationship that had expired, been renegotiated, or never existed.

The study places each player into one of four tiers, Retrieval Anchor, Cited, Moderate and Recoverable, based on a composite Citation Share Score. Mahomes tops the field at 97, followed by Allen at 94 and Kelce at 91, all three drawing consistent, favorable answers across all four engines tested.

Why does the study focus on the September 9 season opener?

The 2026 NFL season opens September 9 with a rematch of Super Bowl LX between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, the two teams that met in the February 2026 championship game. Six players from those two teams appear disproportionately in the Index, with four, Darnold, Walker, Cooper Kupp and Drake Maye, ranking in the top eleven of the 50-player field.

Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who forced two turnovers in that Super Bowl, scores a 57, while Seahawks kicker Jason Myers, who converted five field goals in the same game, scores only a 12, the lowest mark in the top 25. The pattern suggests the recency effect concentrates on skill positions and quarterbacks rather than lifting every player on a rematch roster equally.

What did 5W and Talent Resources say about the findings?

"The kickoff matchup between the Seahawks and Patriots is doing more for four players' AI visibility than a full season of highlights for players on other rosters," said Ronn Torossian, Founder of 5W. "Brands evaluating a fourth-quarter endorsement deal should know which players AI engines are already naming, and which ones AI engines are naming incorrectly."

"Brands come to us looking for the right celebrity or athlete to make them relevant, not just recognizable," said Mike Heller, Founder and CEO of Talent Resources. "We put Ben Affleck behind the drive-thru window for Dunkin's first-ever Super Bowl commercial, and Dunkin' has been one of the most talked-about brands in the game every year since. This Index shows the same standard now applies to AI: being liked by fans is not enough if the AI engine a brand's marketing team is using does not name you as the answer."

What methodology did 5W and Talent Resources use?

Each of the 50 players was scored across four weighted dimensions: AI Recognition (30%), Association Sentiment (25%), Engagement Depth (25%) and Cross-Engine Consistency (20%), the same methodology Talent Resources and 5W applied to the NFL Citation Share Index 2026 and the NFL Owners Reputation Index 2026. Prompts ran across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity between August 18 and August 24, 2026, using standardized sponsor-facing and fan-facing query sets.

AI Recognition measures whether an engine names the player unprompted in response to a category query. Association Sentiment measures whether the surrounding language is commercially favorable, neutral or negative. Engagement Depth measures whether the engine cites specific deals, statistics or storylines rather than a bare name. Cross-Engine Consistency measures how many of the four engines return the same player for the same prompt.

Why does this matter for brands ahead of kickoff?

Brands and agencies increasingly build athlete endorsement shortlists using the same generative engines consumers use for research, so a player absent from AI answers is absent from a growing share of informal due diligence before a deal ever reaches a negotiating table. The 17% fabrication rate found in this Index means nearly one in six AI answers about NFL sponsorships is pointing brands toward a deal that no longer exists.

Where can brands see the full rankings?

The complete 25-player ranking table, methodology and kickoff-effect analysis are published at the NFL AI Endorsement Index 2026 on 5wpr.com. The Index is the ninth joint research release from 5W and Talent Resources in 2026, following the In Tune With AI athlete research, the AI Casting Index, the Creator Documentation Index, the Celebrity Endorsement Index and the Cannes AI Authority Index.
