AI describes your brand before your brand does. That is the shift most CMOs still have not priced in.
Buyers, reporters, hires, and investors are getting a synthesized description of your company from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews before they ever hit your website. When one in five facts in that description is wrong — wrong executive, wrong valuation, wrong company status — you are losing the first meeting before it ever begins.
That number is not hypothetical. It is the pilot result from our new 5W Hallucination Index™. We tested five major fashion brands — Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Skims, Allbirds, Vuori — across 25 core business questions per brand. Every fact was verified against primary sources only: SEC filings, press releases, audited reports, official disclosures.
100 of 125 facts correct. A 20% Hallucination Index. Three of five brands landed in the Active Brand Risk band.
The scorecard
Ralph Lauren, 16%. Wrong CFO named — Jane Nielsen given; correct is Justin Picicci, in the role since August 2025. Stale revenue. Employee count overstated by roughly 3,000. The cleanest brand on the list still has a wrong CFO surfacing in the first investor briefing.
Tommy Hilfiger, 20%. Defaulted to Martijn Hagman as brand CEO. He stepped down in June 2024. Lea Rytz Goldman has been Global Brand President since spring 2024. Headquarters confused between brand operations and parent PVH Corp. Conglomerate brands are the most error-prone entities in the engines.
Skims, 16%. Erased Emma Grede as co-founder. Stale valuation — $4B from 2023 when correct is $5B as of the November 2025 Goldman Sachs–led round. Stale revenue — $750M from 2023 when Skims projected $1B+ for 2025. The valuation gap undersells the company by 25% to every potential hire, partner, and investor.
Allbirds, 28%. Highest risk in the pilot. Model risked listing Joey Zwillinger as CEO — he was replaced in March 2024 by Joe Vernachio. Described Allbirds as a going concern. The company announced a sale of operating assets to AXNY in March 2026 with dissolution expected to close Q2 2026. Missed the April 2026 pivot entirely. Wrong stock exchange — NYSE given, correct is Nasdaq. The model is roughly 18 months stale on operating reality.
Vuori, 20%. Stale valuation — $4B from 2021 when correct is $5.5B from the November 2024 round. One full funding round behind. Stale store count — 40 given when correct is 100+ as of August 2025.
The 5 Hallucination Patterns
Five repeating failure modes drive the Index. None is fashion-specific. All apply to every industry where buyers research before they buy — which is almost every industry.
Leadership Drift. AI models are typically 12–18 months behind on leadership data.
Valuation Lag. Private company valuations lag by one full funding round. Systematically undersells brands by 20–40%.
Founder Erasure. Co-founders disappear from AI descriptions. The third or fourth-named founder is the most likely to be deleted.
Entity Confusion. Conglomerate brands are the most error-prone entities in the engines. Brand HQ, brand revenue, and brand leadership get conflated with parent-company facts.
Transition Blindness. Companies in active transition — pre-IPO, restructuring, M&A, post-pivot — are described as if nothing changed.
The mechanism behind all five is AI memory lag. Frontier models operate with a built-in memory lag of 6–18 months for most brands, longer for any brand with thin third-party coverage. The description AI gives is typically 12 to 18 months behind reality.
What it costs
Wrong executives make the brand look incompetent in front of investors. Stale valuations mean a 25% hiring and partnership disadvantage every time the number gets asked. Missing founders turn into a negative story. Wrong company status means journalists publish AI-assisted articles with false information about the business. Fabricated metrics collapse trust at the exact moment buyers, reporters, and analysts evaluate the brand.
This is a brand-risk surface that did not exist three years ago. It now feeds hundreds of millions of weekly buyer-research queries. It is measurable now. And it is fixable now.
The 60-day protocol
Audit AI outputs across all five major engines. Calculate your Hallucination Index. Fix Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Crunchbase — the engines treat them as ground truth. Push updated leadership and valuation aggressively through the outlets the LLMs read. Publish structured About and leadership pages with schema markup. Seed accurate data across the highest-cited domains: LinkedIn, trade press, YouTube transcripts — the three largest movers in 2025–2026 AI citation data. Document every AI inaccuracy in a persistent log. Re-test every 30–60 days.
If your brand is wrong in AI, your brand is wrong where it matters most.
