New 5W Index Ranks the Top 25 EV Brands by AI Citation Share
MIAMI, Fla. — Ask ChatGPT which electric vehicle to buy. Ask Claude. Ask Perplexity, Gemini, or Google AI Overviews. One brand shows up more than any other — by a margin no competitor comes close to.
Tesla owns 18.4% of AI citation share across consumer EV queries, according to the new 5W EV Citation Share Index. That’s nearly one in five answers — and more than the next three brands combined.
The index, released by 5W AI Communications, ranks the top 25 EV brands by how often each is cited when buyers ask AI engines about electric vehicles. It is the first ranking of its kind for the category.
The leaderboard:
- Tesla — 18.4%
- Rivian — 8.2%
- Ford — 6.4%
- Lucid — 4.8%
- Hyundai Ioniq — 4.4%
- GM — 3.8%
Legacy automakers cluster lower. Toyota lands at No. 17. Honda at No. 18 — both far behind their share of the road.
“Every EV buyer starts inside a chatbox now,” said Ronn Torossian, Founder and Chairman of 5W. “Tesla owns nearly one in five answers. The next three brands combined don’t match it. That’s a citation moat.”
The gap the industry is missing: EV charging networks. Electrify America, EVgo, and ChargePoint — the companies running the infrastructure every EV depends on — are absent from the top 25 entirely. Buyers ask AI engines where to charge, how fast, and what it costs. The answers rarely name them.
Methodology. The index analyzes five AI engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews — across more than sixty consumer-prompt patterns. Figures are modeled directional estimates, not comprehensive logged query data.
The takeaway for every brand in the category: citation share is the new market share. It is measurable, ownable, and — as Tesla’s lead shows — defensible. The brands that build AI visibility now set the answer before their competitors know the game changed.
