Hair Styling Tools AI Visibility & Recommendation Benchmark

Dyson Leads Hair Tool AI Visibility

97.7%

Dyson leads hair styling tools in this measurement, appearing in 57.5% of answers returned across the tested prompts. Its 95% interval is 54.1% to 60.8%. T3 follows at 52.2%, but the intervals overlap, so this sample does not establish a clear visibility difference between the two brands. Remington appears in 17.3% of answers returned, which does not support a finding of broad budget or value visibility.

The study measured 72 prompts three times across Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Appearance rates use 816 answers returned. Citation rates use 806 answers with retrieval evidence. The gap matters: a brand can be named without its own site being cited. For hair-tool brands, missing these answers means losing consideration when consumers ask for help choosing a tool.

Which brands lead hair styling tool answers?

Dyson ranks first with a 57.5% appearance rate, followed by T3 at 52.2%, BaBylissPro at 40.8%, Conair at 38.6%, and Revlon at 38.2%. Shark ranks sixth at 32.4%. The ranking measures whether a brand was named in answers returned, not whether it was recommended or selected first.

The leading group is visible across all four tested engines. Dyson, T3, BaBylissPro, Conair, Revlon, Shark, Hot Tools, and Remington all have measurements on Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. That does not mean the engines name them at the same rate

Appearance rate is the share of the 816 returned AI answers in which each brand was named.

Dyson's 95% interval overlaps T3's interval. T3's interval overlaps BaBylissPro's, while BaBylissPro overlaps Conair and Revlon. Conair and Revlon also overlap. Those differences are within the margin of this sample. The table is a measured ordering, but the overlapping intervals limit claims about separation among these brands.

Where do the engines disagree?

The engines disagree materially on several brands. Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude use different models and retrieval tools, so a gap can reflect system design rather than a universal measure of brand visibility.

Perplexity named Shark in 60.2% of 216 answers, compared with 24.1% for ChatGPT, 16.4% for Gemini, and 25.6% for Claude. It also named Remington in 34.3% of 216 answers, higher than ChatGPT's 21.8%, Gemini's 6.8%, and Claude's 3.9%. GHD follows a different pattern: Perplexity named it in 32.4% of 216 answers and Claude in 20.8% of 207, while Gemini did not name it in 177 answers.

ChatGPT named BaBylissPro in 63% of 216 answers and Hot Tools in 56.5%, compared with Claude's 12.6% and 5.3%. Claude also named Conair in only 6.3% of 207 answers, compared with 56.9% on Perplexity and 52.3% on ChatGPT. Gemini named SharkNinja in 35% of 177 answers, yet Claude did not name it in 207 answers. BaByliss and GHD were also absent from Gemini's measured answers, while Claude did not name SharkNinja.

Dyson and T3 have the most even coverage among the highest-ranked brands, although both remain lower on Claude than on Perplexity and ChatGPT. Dyson's average first mention position of 2.3 is earlier than the other top ten brands. Remington's 8.1 means that when it was named, it tended to appear later in the answer than the other brands profiled here.

Which brands lead each demand cluster?

The cluster view identifies which brands are named most often for each measured group of hair-tool questions. It separates general buyer intent from specific needs, so a brand can lead one question type without leading another.

Demand-cluster leaders

The same answers regrouped by the demand cluster each prompt was sampled for; cluster rates use that cluster's own answer count.

The chart should be read as need-specific visibility, not a universal product verdict. Brands that lead general buyer-intent clusters have broad recognition within these prompts. Brands that lead specific-need clusters have a clearer association with the measured use case. The evidence does not establish performance claims about the tools themselves.

NBC News, Allure, YouTube, Reddit, and CNN also appear in the measured source list. The source pattern indicates that engines frequently ground hair-tool answers in editorial, video, forum, retailer, and marketplace material rather than brand-owned pages.

Which brands are winning and which are at risk?

Brands with the strongest measured visibility

Dyson has the strongest measured visibility: rank 1, a 57.5% appearance rate, a 54.1% to 60.8% interval, and a 2.3 average first mention position. T3 ranks second at 52.2% and appears on all four engines, though its interval overlaps Dyson's. BaBylissPro ranks third at 40.8% and reaches 63% on ChatGPT. Conair and Revlon rank fourth and fifth at 38.6% and 38.2%, respectively, with strong Perplexity and ChatGPT presence.

Brands with measured exposure risk

Remington's exposure risk is its 17.3% appearance rate, eighth-place rank, 8.1 average first mention position, and low Gemini and Claude rates of 6.8% and 3.9%. Shark's 32.4% overall rate masks a narrow engine pattern: 60.2% on Perplexity but 24.1%, 16.4%, and 25.6% elsewhere, plus a 0% owned-domain citation rate. GHD has a 15.8% appearance rate and was absent from Gemini's 177 answers. SharkNinja ranks tenth at 15.3%, with no measured Claude appearances across 207 answers.

What does the tally say about the category?

The category has a visible top tier, but the top five do not separate cleanly on confidence intervals. Dyson's 54.1% to 60.8% interval overlaps T3's 48.8% to 55.6%, while T3 overlaps BaBylissPro. BaBylissPro, Conair, and Revlon form another overlapping group. The measurement supports a ranked table, but not strong claims that brands with overlapping intervals are more visible than each other.

Engine agreement is stronger for whether many brands appear at all than for how frequently they appear. Dyson, T3, BaBylissPro, Conair, Revlon, Shark, Hot Tools, Remington, Drybar, and Bio Ionic each have 100% cross-engine consistency. Yet their engine-level rates often differ sharply. GHD, SharkNinja, and BaByliss have 75% cross-engine consistency, with each absent from one engine's answers.

Third-party publishers carry far more citation presence than brand domains in the measured list. TechRadar, Forbes, Good Housekeeping, Who What Wear, and Today each appear in more than one quarter of answers with retrieval evidence. Among owned sites, Dyson's 4.7% is the highest measured citation rate. Shark and Harry Josh recorded 0%, while Remington and Drybar recorded 0.1%.

What changed during the measurement window?

This dataset is a single measurement window, so it does not measure category change over time. It does show cross-engine divergence within the window, including Shark's 60.2% rate on Perplexity versus 16.4% on Gemini and SharkNinja's 35% rate on Gemini versus 0% on Claude.

What should hair-tool brands fix and re-measure?

  • Remington should test pages and third-party coverage that address the measured budget and value needs, then re-measure whether its 17.3% appearance rate and 8.1 average first mention position improve across all four engines.

  • Shark should investigate its 0% owned-domain citation rate among answers with retrieval evidence. Publish source-ready product information and re-measure owned-domain citations alongside appearance rates on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.

  • GHD should review the absence in Gemini's 177 measured answers. Re-measure GHD's Gemini appearance rate after strengthening pages that can support the needs represented in the prompt set.

  • SharkNinja should separate corporate and consumer-facing product information where the answer systems distinguish them. Re-measure whether the 0% Claude rate changes while preserving the 35% Gemini rate.

  • Conair should address its Claude gap. Re-measure Claude's 6.3% appearance rate against its 56.9% Perplexity and 52.3% ChatGPT rates using the same prompts and trials.

  • Hot Tools should examine its dependence on ChatGPT, where it appears in 56.5% of answers, versus 5.3% on Claude. Re-measure the engine spread after publishing material that answers the specific measured needs.

  • Brands with low owned-domain citation rates should track whether their sites are cited in the 806-answer retrieval-evidence denominator. The benchmark ranges from Dyson's 4.7% to 0% for Shark and Harry Josh.

What does this mean for brands in the category?

Interpretation: awareness in one answer system does not guarantee broad visibility across the other systems. Shark, Hot Tools, GHD, SharkNinja, and Remington show that a strong rate on one engine can coexist with low or absent visibility elsewhere.

Interpretation: brand-owned pages rarely supplied the cited evidence in these measured answers. Brands need to separate two tasks: being named in a response and having their own domain cited when the engine provides retrieval evidence. The study does not establish the cause of either outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Which hair styling tool brand appears most often?

Dyson ranks first with a 57.5% appearance rate across 816 answers returned. Its 95% interval is 54.1% to 60.8%.

How was this study measured?

This flagship study tested 72 hair styling tool prompts three times across Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. It attempted 825 answers, returned 816 for appearance measurement, and recorded retrieval evidence for 806 citation measurements. Appearance rates use answers returned. Citation and source rates use answers with retrieval evidence. The study is limited to these prompts and this measurement date, and it does not measure all category searches or consumer demand.

Study method

How this study was measured

  • Sampling frame fixed first: 72 prompts allocated across the demand clusters before anything was asked.

  • Same questions put to every engine: Perplexity (sonar-pro), ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google), Claude (Anthropic), 3 trials each.

  • 816 answers returned of 825 attempted, 806 with retrieval evidence.

  • Product lines rolled up to parent brands using a registry fixed before scoring.

  • Appearance rate reported with a 95% Wilson interval; citation metrics counted only on answers with evidence.

Methodology appendix

This appendix is generated directly from the measurement record for this study. It is included so any brand named here can reproduce or challenge the result.

What was measured

  • Category: hair styling tools

  • Measurement date: 2026-09-22

  • Depth: flagship — 72 prompts, 3 trial(s) per prompt per engine, 4 engines

  • Answers attempted: 825

  • Answers returned (appearance denominator): 816

  • Answers with retrieval evidence (citation denominator): 806 (97.7% of attempted)

  • Answers that failed outright: 0

  • Analysis version: study-methodology-v2 · entity registry: entity-registry-2026-08-27

Claim limit: Flagship depth: 24 stratified prompts measured three times per engine, so both between-prompt and repeat-generation variation are observable.

How the prompts were sampled

Fixed sampling frame: 68 buyer-intent need(s) from the client's brief are asked verbatim, one prompt each, grouped under: A. Category prompts / B. Hair-type prompts / C. Problem-based prompts / D. Outcome prompts / E. Situation and occasion prompts / F. Price prompts / G. Comparison prompts / H. Feature-driven prompts / I. Brand-neutral discovery prompts / Prompt Controls / Branded prompts / Competitor prompts / Unbranded category prompts / Unbranded consumer-need prompts; then (the prompt budget of 72 could not give a dedicated cell to Hair dryers, Multi-stylers / air stylers, Blow-dryer brushes, Straighteners / flat irons, Curling irons and curling wands, Hot brushes, Diffusers or dryer systems for curly hair, Fine hair, Thick hair, Curly hair, Coily hair, Frizzy hair, Damaged hair, Color-treated hair, Short hair, Long hair, Hair that takes a long time to dry, Consumers concerned about heat damage, Consumers seeking faster styling, Consumers seeking salon-style blowouts, Consumers who struggle with curling their hair, Consumers who want one tool instead of several, Travelers, Consumers with limited storage space, Under $50, Under $100, Under $150, Premium hair tools, Luxury hair tools, Best value, so that demand is covered inside the generic clusters instead), then a documented set of generic commercial demand clusters (general best, everyday mainstream choice, price/value, primary use case, beginner, retail channel, gifting/occasion, specific need, comparison, trust, ownership attribution, quality tier, durability, specialist, emerging) receives the remaining allocation round-robin. The prompt writer supplies wording inside these cells only and does not choose the category's demand structure.

Results are not strictly comparable across engines: each engine uses a different model, a different retrieval tool, and a different answer format, so a gap between two engines can reflect system design as much as brand visibility.

How each metric is defined

  • Appearance rate — the share of returned answers that named the brand. Measured on every answer the engine returned, whether or not it searched the web, so an engine's retrieval behavior does not silently change the denominator.

  • Macro appearance rate — the mean of the per-prompt appearance rates, so each prompt counts once regardless of how many engines answered it.

  • 95% interval — Wilson score interval on the appearance rate. Where two brands' intervals overlap, this study does not support a claim that one is more visible than the other.

  • Owned-domain citation rate — the share of answers with retrieval evidence that cited a URL on the brand's own domain. This is a narrow measure of the brand's own site being used as a source; it is not a measure of total mentions.

  • Share of all citations — the brand's own domain as a share of all attributed publisher citations in the study.

  • Not measured — the brand's official domain could not be established, so no citation result exists. This is never reported as 0%.

  • 0% — the metric could be evaluated, and the event did not occur.

  • Average position — mean position of the brand's first mention in the answer's ordered list of named brands.

  • Cross-engine consistency — the share of engines that named the brand at least once.

  • Repeat consistency — the share of repeated prompt/engine cells where the brand appeared in every trial. Lower values mean the engine's answer is unstable, not that the brand is absent.

Evidence rules

  • An answer counts as having retrieval evidence only when the engine returned a retrieval receipt (search annotations or grounding records). A URL the model merely typed into its prose is not treated as evidence that it searched.

  • Sources are attributed to the publisher behind each retrieval receipt. Intermediary and redirect hosts are never reported as publishers.

  • Publisher identity could not be established for 2 retrieval receipt(s); those are disclosed here rather than attributed or dropped.

  • Source counts are answer-level: a publisher counts once per answer in which it was cited, not once per URL.

Entity handling

Product lines and model names roll up to their parent brand for brand-level metrics, using a registry fixed before scoring. Nothing is merged on the basis of this study's own counts alone.

  • Recommend 3 specific models counted under Recommend specific models (model)

40 further name(s) picked up in the answers were not confidently resolvable to a brand in this category and are held for human classification before the next study; they carry no metrics here.

Limits of these findings

  • This is a point-in-time measurement of what the named systems returned for these exact prompts on 2026-09-22. Engine behavior changes without notice.

  • The prompt set is a stratified sample of category demand, not a census. Results describe these prompts and should not be read as representative of all searches in the category.

  • Where intervals overlap, differences between brands are not statistically distinguishable at this sample size.

  • A brand not listed here was not measured as absent — it simply was not named in these answers.

  • Appearance is a visibility measure, not an endorsement, a quality judgment, or a market-share estimate.
