In the categories 5W tracked, a small number of brands captured the majority of citations across the five major engines. The pattern is more concentrated than traditional share-of-voice or organic search rankings would suggest.

The top-cited brand wins disproportionate consideration.

Across categories, the brand cited first inside AI answers tends to capture far more buyer-research mindshare than its citation rate alone would predict — a self-reinforcing dynamic that compounds over time.

Each engine has distinct citation preferences.

ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews favor different source mixes — community content, editorial press, structured data, and analyst coverage carry different weight per engine. Single-engine optimization leaves citation share unclaimed.

Reddit is a disproportionately influential source.

Across categories with active community discussion, brands with strong Reddit visibility consistently outperformed competitors who relied solely on owned-content marketing. Community sentiment is a top-tier AI citation signal.

Earned media remains the strongest single GEO signal.

Brands with active earned media programs across high-authority publications captured citation share that paid media spend alone could not buy. Independent third-party validation outperforms owned content as an AI citation input.

FINDING 06

Schema markup is a baseline, not a differentiator.

Most leading brands in their categories now have comprehensive schema deployments. The absence of schema is a critical gap; the presence of it is table-stakes. The next-frontier signal is structured citation density across third-party sources.

FINDING 07

Citation decay is real and measurable.

Brands that paused earned media and structured-content investment experienced measurable citation share loss within months — often before traditional metrics reflected the decline. AI visibility is not a one-time investment.

FINDING 08

Local services categories are dramatically under-cited.

HVAC, plumbing, dental, funeral services, car wash, and other local categories show consistent patterns of operator invisibility — most local businesses are not cited at all when buyers ask AI engines for recommendations.

AI Overviews are reshaping the SERP economy.

Across measured categories, AI Overview presence correlates with shifts in click-through patterns and brand impression value. Brands optimized only for click-through rate are increasingly invisible to a growing share of buyers.

The citation gap between leaders and challengers is widening.

Year-over-year, the brands at the top of category citation rankings extended their lead — while challengers without active GEO programs lost ground. The flywheel of citation authority is accelerating, not flattening.
