Car Wash AI Visibility Index: Top 25 U.S. Chains by Citation Share

Published June 22, 2026

Mister Car Wash leads U.S. car wash AI citations with an estimated 13.5% modeled share, ahead of Tommy's Express at 8.2% and Take 5 Car Wash at 6.8%, in 5W's Q1 2026 model of ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Take 5 and Whistle Express now share one owner and together hold 12.2%. The model estimates that about 91% of independent and regional operators have almost no citation share.

Key takeaways

  • Mister Car Wash was taken private by Leonard Green & Partners on May 19, 2026, so it no longer publishes quarterly public results. The first edition tied part of its citation lead to that coverage.
  • Take 5 Car Wash belongs to Whistle Express, which closed its purchase from Driven Brands on April 10, 2025. Driven Brands kept only Take 5 Oil Change.
  • Zips Car Wash emerged from Chapter 11 on April 30, 2025. It is not still restructuring, as the first edition said.
  • Tommy's Express reached 271 units and ranks No. 35 in Entrepreneur's 2026 Franchise 500.
  • Independent operators win AI answers only when their location data, pricing pages and reviews are complete and consistent. The playbook below lists ten steps.

Why do a few chains capture most car wash AI citations?

A few chains capture most citations because they generate repeated, named coverage in places AI answers draw from, such as trade press, filings, franchise rankings and named membership programs. The first edition found six patterns, updated here with verified facts.

  1. Public-company coverage lifted Mister Car Wash in the Q1 2026 model. Mister completed its take-private on May 19, 2026, so that stream of quarterly results has stopped, and this edition does not model the effect.
  2. Multi-brand platforms earn combined citation share. Whistle Express and Take 5 hold 12.2% together, and the Wildcat platform's 4.2% exceeds any one of its brands.
  3. Named membership programs get cited for subscription questions. Mister's Unlimited Wash Club reached 77% of wash sales in Q3 2025, and Tommy's runs TommyClub.
  4. Franchise rankings repeat in trade press. Tommy's Express ranks No. 35 in the 2026 Franchise 500 and describes itself as No. 1 in the car wash category.
  5. Bankruptcy coverage lingers in answers. The first edition reported that AI answers about Zips still referenced the restructuring in Q1 2026, almost a year after Zips emerged on April 30, 2025.
  6. Financing events create coverage. Mister reported $48.4 million of 2025 sale-leaseback proceeds for nine locations, and Quick Quack's 2024 KKR investment drew trade-press attention.

What do the 2025 and 2026 deals mean for AI visibility?

Four ownership changes since 2025 matter because AI answers often repeat older facts after a deal closes. Each chain should publish a dated ownership statement so answers describe the current owner.

Mister Car Wash went private in May 2026

Mister Car Wash announced the Leonard Green deal on February 18, 2026 and closed it on May 19, 2026. The company said it would skip an earnings call for the first quarter because of the transaction, and it no longer files public results.

Whistle Express absorbed Take 5 Car Wash

Whistle Express bought Driven Brands' U.S. car wash business for $385 million, a deal of roughly 380 sites that closed April 10, 2025. Search and chat answers that still list Driven Brands as the Take 5 Car Wash owner are out of date.

Zips emerged from Chapter 11 and changed leadership

Zips Car Wash exited Chapter 11 on April 30, 2025 with about $279 million less debt and named Pete Nani as CEO. Its Rocket Express and Jet Brite brands continued to operate.

Tommy's Express keeps expanding

Tommy's Express reported 271 units in the 2026 Franchise 500 and announced openings in Wisconsin, Oregon and California in mid-2026. Its public growth announcements give AI engines fresh, dated pages to cite.

Why are independent car washes missing from AI answers?

Independent car washes are missing because their only public footprint is often a Google Business Profile and a few reviews, while chains publish location pages, pricing, membership terms and press coverage. In the first edition, 5W's model estimated that about 91% of independent and regional operators had effectively zero citation share in their own metro.

The International Carwash Association counted about 17,500 conveyor washes, 29,000 in-bay automatic washes and 16,250 self-service washes in a 2020 study, so most of the market is small operators. Mid-size chains also struggle: the first edition found that regional chains rarely exceed about 1% share.

How can a car wash improve its AI visibility?

A car wash improves its AI visibility by making each location easy to identify, price and compare in the places AI answers read. These ten steps apply to chains and single-site owners.

  1. Complete the Google Business Profile for every location, including the car wash category, hours, services, photos and review replies. Google AI Overviews and Gemini draw local results from this data, so an incomplete listing hands the answer to a competitor with a complete one.
  2. Keep name, address and phone identical on Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and Facebook. Chat assistants cross-check several directories, and conflicting details lower the chance a location is named.
  3. Give each location its own page with CarWash schema.org markup covering address, hours, price range and service area. A separate page lets an engine quote one location's details without guessing.
  4. Publish membership pricing in plain HTML: plan names, monthly price, what each tier includes and how to cancel. Questions such as whether an unlimited plan is worth it are answered from pages that state the price.
  5. Write a break-even page that shows the math. For example, a plan costing $30 a month beats $12 single washes from the third visit. Label the numbers as an example and use your own prices.
  6. Publish separate pages for express, full-service, touchless and self-service washes, plus seasonal pages on winter road salt and EV-safe washing. Each page should answer one question in its first sentence.
  7. Ask customers for reviews that name the service, such as the interior vacuums or the membership app, and reply to every review. Review text gives engines concrete details to repeat.
  8. Announce openings, community events and milestones to local news and trade outlets such as Professional Carwashing & Detailing. Independent mentions give an engine sources beyond your own site.
  9. Post a dated ownership statement on your About page and keep Wikipedia and Wikidata entries accurate with cited edits. Answers can repeat old ownership details after a sale, which is why the Take 5 and Mister corrections above matter.
  10. Test monthly. Ask five engines 20 prompts per metro, such as "best unlimited car wash near [neighborhood]", record which brands and sources appear, and compare month to month.

What does 5W's founder say about car wash AI search?

"Car wash is the cleanest example we've measured of an industry where consumer discovery moved to AI before the operators noticed. The customer is no longer driving past a car wash and remembering the brand. The customer is at home asking ChatGPT which car wash to visit, and ChatGPT answers with one of about ten national chains. Most independent and regional operators we tracked are effectively invisible in AI search. The operators who build their location data, pricing pages and press footprint now will be named when the question is asked."

Ronn Torossian, Founder and Chairman of 5W.

How was citation share modeled?

Citation shares in this index are modeled estimates built by the 5W Research Team for ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews in Q1 2026. 5W does not log live query runs, so the shares are directional benchmarks, not deterministic counts.

Sub-categories and update scope

The model covered four sub-categories: national conveyor chains, express-exterior chains, full-service chains and franchise networks. This October 2026 update did not re-run the model. It corrects ownership, location and industry facts using public filings, company announcements and trade press, and it adds the playbook. A new model run is needed to show whether the 2025 and 2026 deals changed any brand's share.

Frequently asked questions

How were the car wash citation share figures calculated?

The figures are modeled estimates from 5W's Q1 2026 model of five AI engines. 5W does not log live query runs, so the shares are directional benchmarks.

Did Mister Car Wash going private change its AI citation share?

This edition does not model that. The Q1 2026 model predates the take-private that closed on May 19, 2026, and a new model run is needed to see any change.

Who owns Take 5 Car Wash?

Whistle Express owns Take 5 Car Wash. Driven Brands sold its U.S. car wash business to Whistle Express in a deal that closed on April 10, 2025.

Is Zips Car Wash still in bankruptcy?

No. Zips Car Wash emerged from Chapter 11 on April 30, 2025, after the court confirmed its reorganization plan on April 18, 2025.

Are independent car washes included in the ranking?

Yes. The model includes independents, and it estimates that about 91% of independent and regional operators had effectively zero citation share in their own metro.

How can my car wash company get included in the next ranking?
