Why do platforms and publishers capture most citations?
Platforms and publishers capture most citations because they publish planning tools, vendor listings and long editorial archives that AI answers can quote. The first edition found six patterns, updated here.
- Two corporate groups hold the three top planning platforms. The Knot Worldwide owns The Knot and WeddingWire, and Zola is the independent challenger.
- Bridal fashion is a separate citation surface. Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier, Pronovias, BHLDN and David's Bridal compete on dress-specific questions that the planning platforms rarely contest.
- Editorial publications keep citation share. Brides, Martha Stewart Weddings and Vogue Weddings together hold 11.5% of modeled share.
- Industry data brings citations. The Knot's Real Weddings Study, with its $100 billion and $34,000 figures, is quoted in answers about wedding cost.
- Free and niche platforms win narrow questions. Joy wins cost-conscious planning questions and Honeyfund wins honeymoon-fund questions.
- Couples increasingly start inside AI. The Knot reported 36% of couples actively using AI tools, which is why its ChatGPT app and David's Bridal's Pearl both target planning inside AI.
What happened in wedding AI during 2026?
Wedding AI in 2026 moved from search to apps and platforms. Each event produced dated coverage that engines can cite.
The Knot launched an app inside ChatGPT
The Knot Worldwide launched its app inside ChatGPT on February 3, 2026, the first from the wedding industry. The company said couples could reach nearly 200,000 U.S. vendors through it.
The Knot published its 2026 Real Weddings Study
The Knot Worldwide released the study on February 18, 2026, based on more than 10,000 U.S. couples married in 2025. It reported a $34,000 average cost, spending of $292 per guest and a $100 billion industry.
David's Bridal moved to spin off Pearl
David's Bridal said on October 22, 2026 that it signed a non-binding letter of intent with K&F Growth Acquisition Corp. II. The plan would list Pearl publicly at about a $350 million valuation, with $75 million of private investment including a $25 million anchor from Cion, and would have Pearl own the David's Bridal brand and intellectual property. Definitive agreements and approvals are still needed, and the stores will operate as usual.
Couples worry about vendor cancellations
The Knot said 74% of couples it surveyed in February 2026 worried they would lack a safety net if a vendor fell through close to the wedding. That worry is a content opportunity for vendors who publish a backup plan.
Why are individual wedding vendors missing from AI answers?
Individual vendors are missing because general questions such as "best wedding photographer in [city]" route to platforms and editorial lists before any single vendor. In the first edition, 5W's model estimated that about 84% of individual wedding vendors had effectively zero citation share in their own metro.
The first edition also gave counts of about 50,000 wedding photographers and 75,000 planners. Those counts were removed because 5W could not source them.
How can a wedding vendor improve its AI visibility?
A wedding vendor improves its AI visibility by publishing the details a couple needs to compare vendors, on its own pages and on the platforms engines already cite. These ten steps use situations couples actually face.
- Keep your Knot, WeddingWire and Zola listings complete and identical to your own site. The Knot's ChatGPT app draws on its vendor listings, so an out-of-date listing can be repeated.
- Venues should publish capacity ranges, ceremony and reception spaces, what the rental includes, rental price ranges, seasonal availability and rain plans. Questions such as "wedding venue for 120 guests near [city]" are answered from pages that give numbers.
- Photographers should publish package hours, prices, delivery time, travel fees and styles, and give each specialty its own page, such as elopements or destination weddings.
- Planners should publish pricing models for full planning, partial planning and day-of coordination, plus a month-by-month planning timeline.
- Give couples a cost anchor. The Knot reported a $34,000 average and $292 per guest for 2025 weddings, so show your typical per-guest price or package range next to those numbers and say what is included.
- Publish a cancellation and backup-vendor policy. With 74% of couples worried about a vendor falling through, a clear page on deposits, rebooking and backup vendors answers a question couples are asking.
- Bridal retailers should list size ranges, price tiers, appointment lead times and alteration timelines. These are the questions couples ask when comparing a retailer such as David's Bridal with a designer.
- Win a niche in your city, such as Indian weddings, sustainable weddings or courthouse weddings, with a dedicated page that names the city and the details.
- Earn real-wedding features in editorial outlets such as Junebug Weddings and Style Me Pretty, and collect reviews that name the venue or service.
- Test monthly. Ask five engines 20 prompts per metro, such as "wedding photographer near [city] under $4,000" and "wedding venue for 100 guests in [city]", record which brands and sources appear, and compare month to month.

What does 5W's founder say about wedding AI search?
"Couples open ChatGPT before they have chosen a venue, a photographer, a planner or a dress. The platform that AI surfaces is the one that shapes the consideration set before a couple asks about specific vendors. The brands that recognize that and build their listings, pricing pages and press footprint now will compete. The ones that wait will find the consideration set has hardened around platforms whose relationship with the couple starts before the planning does."
Ronn Torossian, Founder and Chairman of 5W.
How was citation share modeled?
Citation shares in this index are modeled estimates built by the 5W Research Team for ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews in Q1 2026. 5W does not log live query runs, so the shares are directional benchmarks, not deterministic counts.
Sub-categories and update scope
The model covered five sub-categories: planning platforms, bridal fashion, editorial publications, photography brands, and stationery and registry services. The index measures citation share for communications strategy and does not rank vendors on quality. This October 2026 update did not re-run the model. It corrects arithmetic, attribution and store counts using company releases and trade reports, and it adds the playbook. A new model run is needed to show how The Knot's ChatGPT app and the Pearl plan changed any brand's share. Ronn Torossian's quote was shortened to remove the 84%, 73% and 36% figures now explained above.
