The Series
National brands spent a century buying shelf space, television time, and search rankings. Answer engines weight none of it. The Private Label AI Advantage is a five-part 5W AI Visibility Index series measuring what they weight instead.
Each study models the Citation Share of 25 brands across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, on 64 consumer-intent prompts — store brands against national brands, one category at a time. The series does not assume an answer. It tests one.
Citation Share is a directional visibility model measuring how frequently brands, retailers, and experts appear across AI-generated answers inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Scores are indexed 0–100, estimated from current answer-engine behavior and the structure and density of the open-web content each brand can be surfaced from. It is a model of the retrieval landscape — not a logged-query count, which is unstable and easily gamed.
The Five Studies
Published weekly. The arc runs from thesis to exception to inversion — read in order, the five studies show exactly where the private-label advantage holds and where it breaks.
How to Read the Series
Each study is built to the same 16-section standard: a Citation Share Index ranking 25 brands, a platform-by-platform breakdown, sub-category analysis, a grounding-source map, and a GEO playbook. The studies are directional models — estimated from current answer-engine behavior and the open-web content brands can be surfaced from, not logged-query counts.
The series sits within the broader 5W AI Visibility Index — 5W’s ongoing research into how generative engines surface brands across consumer search.
