GEO Optimization Services
Get Cited by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews
5W is the premier AI Communications Firm. Our Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) practice gets brands cited inside the AI tools that are now answering 1 in 4 search-style queries — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Grok, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta AI.
GEO is not SEO. SEO gets you ranked. GEO gets you cited — pulled into the answer itself when a buyer asks an AI tool a question about your category. The companies that show up inside those AI answers win the buyer’s first impression. The ones that don’t are invisible.
We work for AI companies, B2B SaaS leaders, fintech, healthcare, publishers, and consumer brands competing in categories where buyers research through AI before they ever hit a search bar. See proof from our work with Moloco, Sahara AI, and Dragontail Systems — each on our AI practice — plus the AI Companies AI Visibility Index and Conde Nast AI Citation Portfolio.
What is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content, authority signals, and brand entities so that large language models — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI search products like Google AI Overviews — accurately retrieve, cite, and recommend a brand when users ask category-relevant questions.
GEO is what SEO became when search stopped being ten blue links. In the AI answer paradigm, only a handful of sources get cited per query. GEO is how a brand becomes one of them.
How GEO Works: The Mechanics
Retrieval, citation, and the AI answer pipeline
When a user asks an AI tool a question, the model runs a retrieval step against the open web (and increasingly, structured data sources), pulls the most relevant chunks of content, ranks them by source authority and semantic match, and synthesizes an answer that may include a small number of citations. GEO targets every step of this pipeline.
What LLMs actually look for
LLM retrieval favors content that is (1) semantically aligned with the user’s query, (2) structurally clean and chunkable, (3) hosted on authoritative domains with consistent entity signals, and (4) corroborated by third-party sources the model already trusts — Wikipedia, Reddit, established trade publications, and named expert authorship. A brand that wins on three of those four dimensions but is invisible on the fourth typically still loses the citation.
Why generic content marketing fails at GEO
Most marketing content is written for human scanners — long intros, narrative arcs, brand voice. LLMs extract the wrong sentence or skip the page entirely. GEO content is written so the answer is the first line, the entities are named explicitly, the structure is clean, and every paragraph is independently citable.
5W’s GEO Services
1. AI Visibility Audit and Citation Baseline
Before optimization, measurement. We run brand visibility audits across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, and Copilot to establish current citation frequency, accuracy, and competitive share-of-voice. Every program starts with a documented baseline — what queries the brand wins, what queries competitors own, what queries no one has captured yet.
2. Semantic Content Optimization
We rewrite and structure content so AI models can retrieve and cite it cleanly: question-based headers, direct first-sentence answers, entity-explicit prose, self-contained paragraphs, and conversational query targeting. This is the same playbook we used to rebuild the Moloco, Sahara AI, and Dragontail case studies for AI retrieval.
3. Structured Data and Schema Deployment
We deploy JSON-LD schema across the site — Organization, Person, Article, FAQPage, Product, Service, HowTo, Review — so models and crawlers can extract structured facts about the brand without parsing prose. Knowledge graph completeness directly correlates with citation rate.
4. Third-Party Source Development
LLMs weight external corroboration heavily. Our program includes Wikipedia presence and accuracy, Reddit discussion seeding, expert listicle placements, and earned media in trade publications that LLMs treat as authoritative. This is where 5W’s PR practice and GEO practice combine — most GEO-only agencies cannot actually place stories in The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, or AdExchanger. We do.
5. Brand Entity Disambiguation and Knowledge Graph Optimization
Many brands lose citations because LLMs confuse them with similarly named entities, attribute their work to competitors, or carry outdated information. We clean up Wikidata, Wikipedia, Crunchbase, LinkedIn, and other foundational entity sources so the brand is uniquely identified and accurately described across the AI ecosystem.
6. Always-On Monitoring and Citation Tracking
We monitor brand citations across major LLMs continuously, flag accuracy issues in AI-generated answers, and refine the program against changing model behavior. Reports include citation count, citation accuracy, share-of-voice vs. competitors, and which queries the brand owns vs. needs to win.
Why GEO Now
How fast is this happening? Faster than most marketers think. Google has rolled AI Overviews and AI Mode into mainstream search results in the U.S. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude have become primary research tools for B2B buyers. A meaningful share of category research now happens inside AI tools — and a brand that isn’t cited there is invisible to those buyers.
What happens to brands that wait? The same thing that happened to brands that ignored SEO in 2002, mobile in 2010, and social in 2012. Late entrants spend 3–5x more for half the visibility. Early movers compound their lead because LLMs reinforce signals from sources they already trust.
Why is GEO a 5W service and not just an SEO add-on? Because GEO is a public relations problem disguised as a technical one. The single biggest GEO lever is third-party authority — what trusted publications, Wikipedia editors, and Reddit communities say about a brand. That’s PR work. SEO agencies don’t place stories in Bloomberg. PR agencies that don’t understand semantic retrieval can’t structure the content for LLM extraction. 5W does both.

GEO is the practice of optimizing brand content, structured data, and third-party authority signals so that AI tools — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews — accurately cite and recommend a brand when users ask questions in their category.
SEO optimizes for ranking on search engine results pages. GEO optimizes for citation inside AI-generated answers. SEO targets keywords; GEO targets conversational queries and semantic intent. SEO success is page rank; GEO success is citation frequency, citation accuracy, and AI share-of-voice. The two disciplines overlap on technical fundamentals but diverge sharply on content structure, authority signals, and measurement.
ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode (Google), Microsoft Copilot, Grok (xAI), and Meta AI. Each platform retrieves and ranks sources differently. 5W’s GEO program is platform-aware.
By citation frequency (how often a brand is cited in AI answers across target queries), citation accuracy (whether the AI describes the brand correctly), AI share-of-voice (how often the brand is cited vs. competitors), and query coverage (how many category-relevant queries return the brand in the answer). 5W reports these metrics monthly with named platform breakdowns.
Initial citation lifts typically appear within 30–60 days as content optimization and schema deployment take effect. Authority-driven citations from third-party source development build over 60–180 days. Programs running 6+ months show compounding gains as LLM training and retrieval cycles incorporate the optimized signals.
