AI Visibility Index
An entry in The GEO Lexicon, published by 5W.
An AI visibility index is a composite score that summarizes how prominently and accurately a brand, or a group of brands, appears in AI-generated answers across engines and questions. It combines measures such as mentions, citations, recommendations and sentiment into one comparable figure. There is no standard formula, so any index is only as meaningful as its published method, sample and weights.
What goes into an index?
An index blends several measures, and different providers choose different ones. The table lists common components and what each captures.
| Component | What it captures |
|---|---|
| Answer inclusion rate | How often the brand is named in answers |
| Citation share | How often its pages are cited as sources |
| Recommendation rate | How often it appears when options are suggested |
| Position or prominence | Whether it appears first or later in an answer |
| Mention sentiment | Whether mentions are positive, neutral or negative |
| Accuracy | Whether the facts stated about the brand are correct |
How does it compare with share of voice?
An AI visibility index is sometimes described as the generative version of share of voice, because both compare a brand with competitors. They differ in what they count. Share of voice usually counts mentions or coverage in media or social channels. An AI visibility index counts presence and quality inside AI answers, which come from many sources and vary by run. Treat them as separate measures.
How should an index be read?
Before trusting any index, check how it was built. Useful questions are:
- Which engines were tested, and on what dates?
- How many questions were used, who chose them and do they match real buyer research?
- How many times was each question run?
- How were the components weighted, and why?
- How were brand names and variants matched?
- What is the margin of error, and how much does the score move between runs?
An index that does not answer these cannot be compared fairly with others. 5W publishes an AI Visibility Index research series and describes the method of each edition on its pages. See the AI Visibility Index.
Illustrative index summary (example only)
- Engines: four, tested in one week
- Questions: 60, three runs each
- Weights: inclusion 30%, citation 30%, recommendation 20%, accuracy 20%
- Reported score: 0 to 100 for each brand, with the sample size stated
What are the pitfalls?
- Hidden weights. A single score can hide which component moved.
- Small samples. Few questions or runs make scores unstable.
- Moving targets. Engines change, so a score from one month may not match the next.
- Gaming. Any score can be pushed in ways that do not reflect real buyer experience.
- False precision. Reporting decimals on a noisy measure suggests accuracy that is not there.
How do you build one for a brand?
- Choose the questions that matter to buyers, and keep them fixed. See prompt audit.
- Run them on a set of engines, several times each, on a regular schedule.
- Measure each component separately and report them alongside the composite.
- Publish the weights and the method, and keep the same ones over time.
- Compare with named competitors measured the same way.
- Use the results to find causes. See visibility gap analysis and AI visibility audit.
Visibility is not sales. Use the index to guide work and check results against business outcomes. No outcome is guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI visibility index?
It is a composite score that summarizes how prominently and accurately a brand appears in AI-generated answers across engines and questions.
Is there a standard AI visibility index?
No. Providers choose their own components, weights and samples, so scores from different indexes are not directly comparable.
How often should an index be updated?
Answers change within weeks, so many teams measure monthly or quarterly, and after major news or product changes.
Is a higher score always better?
Not necessarily. A high score built on mentions with negative sentiment or wrong facts is not good. Look at the components, not only the total.
Does the index predict sales?
Not by itself. It measures presence in AI answers. Whether that leads to sales depends on the product, the buyer and what else influences the decision.
