Share of Voice (SOV) measures what percentage of total media coverage, social conversation, or advertising impressions within a category belongs to a specific brand. It has been the standard competitive benchmark in communications for decades.

How It's Calculated

Traditional SOV = (your brand mentions ÷ total category mentions) × 100. The denominator can be media placements, social mentions, search impressions, or ad spend — depending on channel. Tools like Meltwater, Brandwatch, and Sprout Social automate the tracking.

SOV vs. Market Share

Binet and Field's research established that brands whose SOV exceeds their market share tend to grow, while brands whose SOV trails their market share tend to shrink. The principle — "excess SOV drives growth" — remains one of the strongest empirical findings in marketing.

The AI Communications Evolution: Citation Share

Share of Voice measures who gets mentioned in media. Citation Share measures who gets mentioned in AI answers. As buyers shift from Google to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, the metric that matters is shifting with them. Citation Share is SOV for the answer-engine era — your share of the AI-generated answers buyers now see when they ask the question your category owns.

SOV remains relevant for media tracking. But the growth signal is now Citation Share.
