Social Share of Voice (SSOV) measures what percentage of social media conversation within a defined category belongs to your brand versus competitors. It is the social-channel application of the broader Share of Voice concept.
Calculation
SSOV = (your brand's social mentions ÷ total category social mentions) × 100. Measured across all relevant platforms — X, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Reddit, YouTube, Facebook — using social listening tools.
Why It Matters
SSOV reveals competitive positioning in real-time conversation. A brand with 30% SSOV in the "clean beauty" category owns nearly a third of the conversation — that's mindshare at scale. Tracking SSOV over time shows whether campaigns are gaining or losing ground relative to competitors.
Limitations
SSOV measures volume, not sentiment. A brand in the middle of a controversy may have the highest SSOV in its category — but the conversation is negative. SSOV should always be read alongside sentiment data.
The Citation Share Parallel
SSOV measures share of social conversation. Citation Share measures share of AI-generated answers. As buyer research shifts from social feeds to AI engines, Citation Share becomes the growth metric that SSOV was.
