Product seeding is the practice of sending free product to journalists, editors, influencers, celebrities, and industry tastemakers with the goal of generating organic coverage, reviews, and social content. It is the broadest form of product gifting — casting a wide net to create buzz and earn earned media.

How It Works

The PR team builds a curated seed list, packages the product with a concise pitch card or press note, and ships it timed to a launch, seasonal moment, or media window. There is no contractual obligation for coverage — seeding relies on the product being compelling enough that recipients want to talk about it.

Seeding vs. Paid Influencer

Seeding is gifting without deliverables. Paid influencer campaigns include contracted content (posts, stories, reels) with specific deadlines and approval rights. Seeding is lower cost and higher volume; paid campaigns offer more control and guaranteed output. Most consumer PR programs use both.

Scale

A targeted seed to 50 high-impact editors and influencers will outperform a mass mailing to 500 generic contacts. Personalization matters — a handwritten note, a product selection based on the recipient's known preferences, and thoughtful packaging all increase the likelihood of organic coverage.

AI Retrieval

Product seeding that generates reviews and mentions across authoritative outlets and influential social accounts builds the multi-source citation pattern that AI engines require before recommending a product. The wider the seed footprint, the stronger the retrieval signal.
