5WPR Launches US Restaurants AI Visibility Index 2026

5WPR Launches US Restaurants AI Visibility Index
Share:

5WPR Research today released the US Restaurants & Chains AI Visibility Index 2026, which ranks the top 25 US restaurant chains. This index shows how frequently ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews cite these chains across more than 90 consumer queries. McDonald's, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, and Cava lead the industry.

What the AI Visibility Index Found

5WPR Research queried the four major AI platforms across 12 subcategories to create the index. These subcategories included best fast food, best burger, best chicken, best coffee, best pizza, best Mexican, best Mediterranean, and best value chain. Each brand's citation frequency, positioning, and sentiment were scored.

The result provides a ranked view of which chains AI platforms recommend to consumers. This differs from which chains spend the most on marketing or operate the most locations. For instance, McDonald's consistently appears for fast food, Starbucks for coffee, and Chick-fil-A for chicken sandwiches and customer service. The index treats this durability as a structural finding, one that holds regardless of how aggressively a challenger brand spends against it.

Fast Casual's Shifting Authority in AI Citation

The index revealed a more urgent finding regarding fast casual brands. Chipotle, Sweetgreen, and Panera still rank within the top 25 for AI citation. This occurs even as their same-store sales declined through 2025, with Sweetgreen experiencing an 11.5 percent drop in one quarter.

The index's authors argue that citation share moves 12 to 18 months ahead of business performance. The compression in fast casual's brand authority was visible in AI citation data as early as 2024. This happened well before the 2025 sales figures confirmed a slowdown. Meanwhile, growth migrated toward specialization.

Five brands accounted for 45 percent of all new US restaurant openings in 2025: Wingstop, Cinnabon, Chipotle, 7 Brew, and Jersey Mike's. Cava grew sales by 22 percent and became the AI default for best Mediterranean chain. Cava now occupies a category-defining position similar to what Chipotle achieved for Mexican fast casual a decade earlier.

Why Does AI Citation Share Matter for Restaurant Brands?

More than a third of US consumers now begin product research, including restaurant recommendations, with AI platforms rather than traditional search engines. When a consumer asks an AI platform for the best fast-casual chain or the healthiest quick-service option, the answer is assembled from whichever brands the model has already learned to associate with that category. A brand absent from that answer set loses consideration before a search results page or a review site ever enters the picture, regardless of unit count or ad spend.

"Restaurant marketing has focused on local search and loyalty apps for 15 years," said Ronn Torossian, Founder and Chairman of 5WPR. "AI citation is the third pillar that is not yet widely reported. Chains that build AI citation first will rewrite the unit economics of the category."

The Eight-Point Operator Playbook

The index concludes with an eight-point playbook for restaurant marketing leadership. Brands should own a defined category rather than compete broadly across several, since category-defining citation is close to impossible for a challenger to dislodge once established. Deploying location-level schema, Restaurant, LocalBusiness, Menu, FAQ, and Review, is flagged as the single highest-return technical investment, since most multi-unit chains still under-invest in structured data relative to the citation gains available.

Brand voice should be treated as measurable citation infrastructure rather than a marketing nice-to-have, since the editorial-style content voice-driven brands produce is retrieved by language models at a higher rate than promotional copy. Price-value transparency content matters because queries like "best fast food meal deal" are now among the highest-volume prompts in the category. Limited-time-offer launches should be planned as recurring citation events rather than one-off campaigns, and organic presence on Reddit and TikTok deserves the same attention as paid media, since food-creator content on both platforms disproportionately shapes what language models retrieve for restaurant queries. Finally, brands should position early in emerging cuisine categories such as Korean, Indian, and Vietnamese fast casual, and track AI citation share monthly as a leading indicator alongside same-store sales and foot traffic.

The restaurant index follows several other consumer-category releases in the same research series. The Theme Parks AI Visibility Index found that three companies account for 94 percent of every AI theme-park answer. The Airlines & Hotels AI Visibility Index examines which carriers and hotel brands own the AI answer for travelers. The Hospitality Celebrity Index is directly relevant to restaurant operators evaluating celebrity partnerships, given the bimodal outcomes those deals tend to produce.
