Six publicly traded quantum-only companies. More than $50 billion in combined market capitalization. IonQ just reported $80.1 million in a single quarter — a 287% year-over-year increase. Quantinuum completed its SPAC. Xanadu closed $3.1 billion.
None of it matters inside the chatbox.
The 5W Quantum Computing AI Visibility Index analyzed 3,600 quantum-related prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews between February and July 2026. The findings:
- 71% of enterprise quantum prompts cite a hyperscaler — IBM, Google, or Microsoft — before naming any pure-play quantum company.
- Less than 9% of citations came from pure-play company domains (ionq.com, rigetti.com, dwavequantum.com, quantinuum.com).
- IBM is cited 4.3× more than IonQ — the largest pure-play by revenue — in head-to-head enterprise evaluation queries.
- Cloudflare earns higher citation frequency in post-quantum cybersecurity queries than any quantum computing company on earth.
The quantum computing industry has a $50 billion AI visibility problem. The companies building the technology are losing the AI answer to the companies surrounding them.
The IonQ Paradox: $280 Million in Revenue, Invisible in the Enterprise Answer
IonQ is the commercial proof case.
The company posted Q1 2026 revenue of $64.67 million — a 755% year-over-year increase. Management raised full-year guidance to $280–290 million. Remaining performance obligations surged 554% year-over-year to $470 million. IonQ's trapped-ion architecture leads the field in gate fidelity. Its Q2 revenue hit $80.1 million. The market cap exceeds $20 billion.
But when an enterprise CTO asks ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity which quantum computing company should we evaluate, IBM appears first in 71% of responses. IonQ appears as a secondary mention — after IBM, after Google, after Microsoft, and often after Quantinuum.
The reason is structural, not editorial. IBM's 20-year quantum research archive, Qiskit open-source framework, and IBM Quantum Experience cloud platform create a citation depth no pure-play can replicate. But IonQ compounds the problem: its most detailed technology documentation lives inside investor presentations (PDFs behind IR portals) and earnings transcripts (attributed to Seeking Alpha or Yahoo Finance, not to ionq.com). IonQ is producing the most comprehensive public record of its technology — and receiving zero citation credit because the format and hosting are wrong for AI retrieval.
The gap between IonQ's commercial position and its AI citation share is the single clearest illustration of the AI visibility problem facing the entire quantum industry.

The dominance of consulting firms is the defining structural feature of the quantum citation stack. McKinsey's Quantum Technology Monitor appeared in 38% of strategic-evaluation prompts tested. When McKinsey writes that quantum computing has reached "a commercial tipping point," AI engines reproduce that frame. Consulting-firm citation share in quantum (30–35%) is more than double the consulting-firm share in any consumer category 5W has measured.

But the cited sources are Yahoo Finance, Motley Fool, Seeking Alpha, and Barron's — not the companies' own investor-relations pages. Pure-plays earn the brand mention but not the domain citation. The financial publisher layer captures the citation credit.
Cybersecurity (PQC) Queries: Quantum Companies Are Absent
When enterprise security teams ask how does quantum computing threaten our encryption, the answer belongs to NIST, CISA, and Cloudflare. NIST's FIPS 203, 204, and 205 standards and the CNSA 2.0 January 2027 acquisition deadline structure every PQC response. Cloudflare — a CDN company — earns higher citation frequency in post-quantum cybersecurity queries than any quantum hardware company. The PQC market is projected at $2.84 billion by 2030. The quantum hardware industry, whose technology creates the threat PQC addresses, earns zero citation share in this $2.84 billion answer surface.
Why the Pure-Plays Are Losing: Four Structural Patterns

And AI engines trust them more than they trust the companies that do.
3. Investor Content Is Invisible to AI Engines
IonQ, Rigetti, and D-Wave publish detailed quarterly earnings, technology roadmaps, and use-case documentation — the most granular public record of quantum technology progress available. Almost none of it earns AI citations. Investor presentations are PDFs behind IR portals. Earnings transcripts are attributed to Seeking Alpha, not to the company. Structured blog posts on company domains earn citations. Slide decks on third-party financial platforms do not.
4. The "Quantum Advantage" Timeline Caveat Suppresses the Entire Category
Every AI engine tested includes a version of the caveat: fault-tolerant quantum computing is still years away. This frame — sourced primarily from DARPA's QBI program and widely-cited statements from NVIDIA's CEO — compresses the citation surface for current commercial offerings. AI engines treat quantum as a future technology even when current-quarter revenue numbers are available. The timeline caveat has no equivalent in consumer categories.

Over-Indexing on Citation Share

- Quantinuum — NVIDIA's $600M investment functions as the single most-cited third-party endorsement in the category. AI engines weight the NVIDIA endorsement as a proxy for technology quality.
- QuEra Computing — Pre-revenue. One Nature paper (96 logical qubits, January 2026) earned more AI citation share than companies with hundreds of millions in funding. Peer-reviewed publication in a top journal is the highest-ROI citation strategy in the category.

- PsiQuantum — $750M+ in total funding. GlobalFoundries manufacturing partnership. Functionally invisible in AI answers because the company has not shipped a commercial system. Funding does not earn citations. Shipped products do.
- Every quantum hardware company in PQC queries — The industry building the threat earns zero citation share in the answer about how to respond to it.
Future Risks and Inflection Points
1. The Logical Qubit Race Resets the Scoreboard
Physical qubit counts have been the primary metric AI engines use to rank quantum companies. The shift to logical qubits — QuEra's 96, Quantinuum's 48, IBM's target of 200 by 2029 — creates a new benchmark where current citation leaders may not lead. Companies that publish logical qubit milestones in peer-reviewed formats earn disproportionate pickup during the transition.
2. DARPA's QBI Becomes the Official Scorecard
DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative is building a standardized, government-sanctioned benchmark for quantum utility. When published, it will become the framework AI engines use to evaluate quantum companies — replacing the current patchwork of self-reported metrics. Companies inside QBI earn citation share. Companies outside it lose it.
3. The CNSA 2.0 Deadline Drives Enterprise Urgency on PQC

Methodology
The 5W Quantum Computing AI Visibility Index analyzed 3,600 category prompts across enterprise evaluation, technical comparison, qubit-architecture, use-case (pharma, finance, logistics, cybersecurity, materials science), investment, workforce, and post-quantum-cryptography query clusters. Prompts were tested across the five major U.S. consumer- and enterprise-facing AI platforms — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews — between February 3 and July 15, 2026.
Citation share was measured by counting source domain attributions inside AI-generated responses. Where a platform did not surface visible source citations — as is common with ChatGPT's default interface and Gemini's conversational mode — 5W applied retrieval pattern analysis: identical prompts were tested across citation-displaying platforms (Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) and citation-suppressed platforms, and the resulting brand-mention patterns were compared against the source domains visible on citing platforms to identify likely retrieval sources. This cross-platform triangulation method has been applied across all prior 5W AI Visibility Index studies and is documented in detail in the series methodology appendix. Retrieval pattern analysis identifies probable source alignment, not confirmed attribution, and is reported as such throughout the Index.
Brand mentions were de-duplicated across prompts to prevent over-weighting from repeated query phrasing. Tier assignments reflect aggregated citation frequency observed across the test set. Rankings inside each tier reflect citation order inside head-to-head comparison queries.
The "hyperscaler" designation includes IBM, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon where their quantum-specific business units (IBM Quantum, Google Quantum AI, Azure Quantum, AWS Braket) were the cited entity. The Index distinguishes between enterprise-evaluation, technical-comparison, investment, and cybersecurity query clusters because each produces a structurally different citation stack.
