What the 2026 Baby Formula AI Visibility Index means for every brand on the shelf.

By Ronn Torossian

Ask ChatGPT what formula to buy for a newborn. Ask Claude if Similac is still safe. Ask Perplexity whether the store brand is really the same as the name brand. The answers are already written, and they don't track the way you'd expect.

5W's Baby Formula AI Visibility Index 2026 measured how often brands appear when parents ask the AI engines, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, the questions that used to start with a pediatrician or a registry site. Standardized buyer-intent prompts. Purchase intent, safety, recall, budget comparisons. Fifteen brands tracked.

Enfamil owns 20.6% of estimated citation share. Similac holds 15.8%. ByHeart, months removed from a nationwide recall, holds 0.6%. That gap is the story.

A parent comparing Parent's Choice to Similac is often comparing two products made in the same factory to the same federal standard. AI doesn't know that unless someone tells it. Right now, almost nobody is.

Here's what the baby formula AI visibility data actually shows.

Does Recency Beat Severity?

ByHeart's November 2025 recall involved 48 confirmed and probable infant botulism cases and zero deaths; the CDC declared the outbreak over within three months. Similac's 2022 recall involved two infant deaths under investigation. AI doesn't weigh the two the same way. ByHeart's citation share collapsed further, and faster, than Similac's ever did. Inside the answer, how recently something happened matters at least as much as how bad it was.

Does Scale Buy Recovery Time?

Similac still holds the second-largest citation share in the category four years after its recall. Evenflo, a much smaller player in 5W's Strollers & Car Seats AI Visibility Index, still carries a citation penalty six years after a comparable event. A national brand with resources to spend on remediation and communications recovers more AI visibility than a smaller brand carrying a similarly aged story. Size isn't just a market advantage. It's an AI-recovery advantage, and it compounds: a bigger comms budget buys more of the dated, specific, citable content that a retrieval system actually rewards, which is the same mechanism 5W has documented across the AI Visibility Index series.

Same Factory, Different Answer

Parent's Choice and Kirkland Signature are manufactured by Perrigo to the same FDA nutritional standard as Bobbie. The two store brands combine for 7.0% of citation share. Bobbie holds 13.4% alone. The model doesn't know, or doesn't say, that the cheaper box and the trendier box came off the same line. Manufacturing parity isn't reaching the answer. Brand narrative is doing all the work.

Why Doesn't Anyone Own the Import Question?

Parents ask constantly whether it's legal to buy HiPP or Holle from Europe. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has seized shipments as misbranded. The FDA has issued a warning letter to at least one importer. None of that enforcement history has turned into a clear, citable answer inside the AI engines. The same is true of real-time recall status: the FDA maintains the data, but no brand or neutral source owns the AI-citable version of "is my formula part of a current recall."

What Should Brands Do Next?

If your brand shares a manufacturer with a national name, say so, explicitly, in dated and citable content. If your brand carries a recall, publish the remediation with the same specificity as the original investigation, not less. Run the buyer-intent queries yourself, across every major engine, and see what's actually being said, then track the results the same way you'd track share of voice in earned media. That's GEO — Generative Engine Optimization, built for how retrieval actually works, not how a press release used to.

A parent's first real research on formula safety increasingly happens inside a chat window, not a pediatrician's office or a Facebook group. If your brand isn't in that answer, or is in it for the wrong reason, you're not in the consideration set. The brands that treat AI citation share as a metric worth managing, the way they already manage search rankings and social sentiment, will be the ones parents are handed by default.
