How Do Hotels and Restaurants Use SEO and PR to Win Direct Bookings?

Hotels and restaurants use SEO and PR together by earning press coverage that links to their booking and menu pages, which lifts local search rankings and moves guests from online travel agencies (OTAs) to direct bookings. Cloudbeds' 2026 analysis of more than 90 million bookings, reported by Codeless, puts typical OTA commissions for independent hotels at 15% to 30%, so every booking moved to the direct channel keeps that fee.

Why Do Hotels and Restaurants Need SEO and PR Together?

Hotels and restaurants need SEO and PR together because search decides whether a guest finds the property, and independent press coverage decides whether that guest trusts it enough to book direct. Kalibri Labs' 2026 data, summarized in the same Codeless report, shows a net average daily rate (ADR) that is $42 higher per booking on a hotel's own website than on OTA reservations.

The two disciplines produce different assets, and each one needs the other to pay off. Read together with the SEO and public relations guide, the split looks like this.

DisciplineWhat it producesWhere the result shows up
SEOFast, bookable pages that match what guests search forOrganic rankings and Google Business Profile views
PRIndependent coverage, links and reviews from sources guests trustBacklinks, brand mentions and review volume
Both togetherCoverage that points at the right landing pageLocal pack position and direct bookings

How Does PR-Earned Coverage Raise Local and Organic Rankings?

PR-earned coverage raises rankings because a link from a news or travel outlet to a hotel or restaurant page counts toward the prominence and authority that Google weighs. Google Business Profile Help says local results rest on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence reflects how many websites link to a business and how many reviews it has. Backlinko's analysis of 11.8 million Google search results found the first result averaged 3.8 times more backlinks than positions two through ten.

The link only helps the page it points at, so each story needs a target before it is pitched.

  • A feature on a seasonal menu should link to the menu page.
  • A hotel opening or renovation story should link to the rooms and booking page.
  • A neighborhood guide mention should link to the property's own destination guide.

How Does PR Generate Reviews and Lift a Google Business Profile?

PR generates reviews when coverage sends guests who arrive with trust already in place, and a follow-up routine turns those visits into published Google reviews. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can improve local ranking, and that replying to reviews shows a business values feedback. Google also allows a business to ask for reviews through a link or QR code, but its policy calls offering discounts or free goods for a review fake engagement and strictly prohibits it.

A repeatable follow-up routine looks like this.

  1. Post each press mention to the Google Business Profile the week it publishes, with photos from the article.
  2. Email guests who attended a covered event with the article and a direct review link.
  3. Place a QR code that opens the review form on receipts, table tents and key cards.
  4. Reply to every review within a day, naming the dish, room or staff member the guest mentioned.

The profile fields below need to be complete before coverage arrives, so new visitors land on accurate information.

Field to completeCommon error to avoid
Business hours, including holidaysName, address and phone that differ across the web
Food or room photos, refreshed monthlyGeneric descriptions with no location or category wording
Attributes such as outdoor seating or takeoutAn unanswered Q&A section
Accurate categories and service areaOld photos that dominate the profile
Weekly postsA profile that was never verified
Quick definition: what is the local pack?

The local pack is the short list of map results Google shows above the regular listings when someone searches for a nearby business. Position in that list depends on relevance, distance and prominence.

How Should Hotels and Restaurants Pitch Local Journalists?

Hotels and restaurants should pitch local journalists one specific story with a named angle, a ready photo and one verifiable detail, sent only to the few reporters who cover that beat. A pitch such as "hotel adds menu items" gives a reporter nothing to write, while a pitch built on a real operating story or neighborhood angle does.

  • Lead with the guest experience for travel writers and the operating story for business reporters.
  • Attach professional photos, a ready quote and one number the reporter can cite.
  • Send one follow-up after about a week, then move on.

Source-request services changed recently. Cision shut down Connectively, the service that replaced HARO, on December 9, 2024, and Hashmeta's 2026 guide lists Source of Sources, Featured and Qwoted among the replacements. Restaurant operators who also run menus and events can pair these requests with food and beverage PR support.

What Does a Travel Brand Case Show About Links and Content?

A case from the agency Siege Media shows that destination guides plus link acquisition can multiply organic traffic for a travel brand. In its own case study, Siege Media reports that for Elk Springs Resort, a luxury cabin rental company in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, it delivered 305% growth in monthly organic blog traffic and 200% growth in sitewide organic traffic. The "Things to do" pages grew organic traffic by nearly 1,500% alongside a 24% increase in links, according to the same case study.

The engagement covered content marketing, SEO and web design, so it shows the content half of the plan rather than a PR campaign. Guides like these give journalists and other sites something to cite, and a hotel's travel and hospitality PR outreach can then point coverage at them.

AI search answers change the plan because the pages cited in Google AI Overviews increasingly come from outside the top ten organic results. Ahrefs' July 2025 study found that 76.1% of AI Overview citations came from top-ten pages, while its March 2026 study of 863,000 keywords found that 37.9% of citations did.

A page outside the top ten can still be selected when several independent outlets describe the same property consistently, so coverage across more than one source matters as much as one strong placement. The mechanism is covered in the guide to earned media in AI search, and GEO optimization services cover the on-site facts and structure that make a hotel's own pages easy to cite. The citation patterns by industry are tracked in the AI Visibility Index research. For measurement, add AI-referral sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com to the same Google Analytics 4 report as organic and PR traffic.

What Does a 90-Day SEO and PR Plan Look Like?

A 90-day SEO and PR plan for a hotel or restaurant runs in four phases: profile cleanup, story development, outreach and measurement.

  1. Weeks 1 and 2: claim and verify the Google Business Profile, fix name, address and phone mismatches, and upload current photos.
  2. Weeks 3 and 4: pick two newsworthy angles tied to searches guests make, such as a seasonal menu or a sustainability project, and prepare the landing page each story will link to.
  3. Weeks 5 to 8: pitch a focused list of travel, food and local reporters, answer relevant journalist requests, and log which angles get replies.
  4. Weeks 9 to 12: count new links and profile actions, check local keyword positions, and compare direct bookings from organic and PR sources.

Frequently asked questions

How much do OTAs charge hotels per booking?

Cloudbeds' 2026 analysis of more than 90 million bookings puts average OTA commissions for independent hotels at 15% to 30%, as reported by Codeless.

Can a restaurant offer a discount for a Google review?

No. Google Business Profile Help classes discounts or free goods offered in exchange for a review as fake engagement and strictly prohibits them, while asking customers to leave a review remains allowed.

Does PR coverage help a Google Business Profile rank?

Coverage can help because Google lists the number of links to a business and its review count as parts of prominence, which feeds local ranking.

How should a hotel measure the plan?

A hotel should measure direct bookings attributed to organic and PR sources in Google Analytics 4, since traffic alone does not show whether coverage brought guests who book.

What Should a Hotel or Restaurant Do First?

A hotel or restaurant should audit its Google Business Profile this week, then choose one local story and the landing page that story will link to. Coverage that points at an unprepared page wastes the link. Profiles with reviews that need attention can also draw on online reputation management support before the first pitch goes out.
