Payments AI Visibility: Stripe Leads, Airwallex Cited Most

5WPR's Payments & Processors AI Visibility Index 2026 measured 297 answers across Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude for 24 payment prompts run on September 14, 2026. Stripe appeared in 80.5 percent of those answers, the highest rate among 26 tracked brands, a lead that does not overlap with any other brand's statistical range.

Which payment brand appears most in AI answers?

Stripe was named in 239 of the 297 returned answers in the 5WPR Payments & Processors AI Visibility Index 2026, an 80.5 percent appearance rate with a 95 percent interval of 75.6 to 84.6 percent. PayPal followed at 67 percent, Adyen at 59.6 percent, and Square at 56.2 percent. Stripe's interval does not overlap PayPal's 61.5 to 72.1 percent range, so this sample supports a real gap between the top two brands.

Why it works: A confidence interval that does not overlap a competitor's interval means the observed gap is unlikely to be sampling noise at this sample size, per the 5WPR Payments & Processors AI Visibility Index 2026 methodology published September 14, 2026.

Does Stripe's lead in appearance also lead in citations?

No. Airwallex recorded a 44.3 percent owned domain citation rate among 296 evidence backed answers, the highest in the category, despite appearing in only 11.8 percent of all returned answers. Stripe's own domain was cited in 13.5 percent of evidence backed answers, well below Airwallex's rate even though Stripe appeared far more often overall.

Why it works: Appearance counts whether an engine names a brand anywhere in its answer. Citation counts whether the engine points to that brand's own domain as the source of a specific fact. The two measures track different behaviors, so a smaller brand can out cite a larger one, according to the same study.

Why does Claude name fewer payment brands than other engines?

Claude did not name Authorize.Net, Block, Finix, GoCardless, Toast or QuickBooks Payments in any of its 74 returned answers, according to the 5WPR Payments & Processors AI Visibility Index 2026. Perplexity and ChatGPT each named Stripe in 100 percent of their answers, while Gemini named it in 69.3 percent and Claude in 52.7 percent.

Why it works: Claude uses Anthropic's own web search tool, while Perplexity's sonar-pro model, OpenAI's search tool and Google's search grounding each draw from different indexes and ranking logic, per the study's engine methodology table published September 14, 2026.

Which publishers get cited most for payment questions?

ConnectPay was cited in 54.4 percent of the 296 evidence backed answers in the 5WPR Payments & Processors AI Visibility Index 2026, ahead of Airwallex's own domain at 44.3 percent and Whop at 39.5 percent. NerdWallet followed at 35.5 percent and Forbes at 34.8 percent.

Why it works: Third party comparison and news sites often carry structured, frequently updated pricing and feature data that AI engines can extract directly, which is why they outrank several brand-owned domains in the citation count, according to the same study.

How does the payments picture compare across engines by rank?

Helcim ranked fifth in appearance at 44.1 percent but reached a 13.9 percent owned domain citation rate, close to Stripe's 13.5 percent despite trailing Stripe by 36 points in appearance. Shopify Inc. ranked sixth at 40.1 percent appearance and posted the category's second highest owned domain citation rate at 17.9 percent, ahead of Stripe on that specific measure.

Why it works: A brand with a narrower but well-documented product set can supply cleaner, more specific answers to niche payment questions, which raises its citation rate even when its overall appearance rate trails larger, broader competitors, according to the 5WPR Payments & Processors AI Visibility Index 2026.

Stripe's appearance lead in payments is real and measurable. Airwallex's citation lead shows that a smaller, less visible brand can still supply more of the evidence AI engines rely on. Brands in this category need to track both numbers, not just one, using the full Payments & Processors AI Visibility Index 2026 alongside the broader Fintech AI Visibility Index 2026 and the Fintech B2B Infrastructure AI Visibility Index 2026 for comparison across segments.
