Buying Guides in AI Answers: 63% of Top Media Citations

Analysis of nearly 40,000 AI citations across five industries finds that product reviews, best-of lists and comparison pages dominate highly cited earned-media content.

AI engines turn to buying guides for most of their top media citations: 63% of the 39,739 citations to the 50 most-cited earned-media pages in each of five industries go to best-of lists, reviews, comparisons or shopping sections. In beauty the share is 79.4%. WSJ Buy Side pages alone drew 2,539 financial services citations. Data covers January 1 to November 7, 2026.

What percentage of AI citations go to buying guides?

Buying guides, meaning best-of lists, reviews, comparisons and shopping-section pages, took 63% of citations to the most-cited earned-media pages across five industries. The study looked at the 50 most-cited pages in each industry, 250 pages and 39,739 citations in total, between January 1 and November 7, 2026.

A page counts as a commerce section if its path sits in a known shopping section, such as wsj.com/buyside, nbcnews.com/select, nytimes.com/wirecutter or forbes.com/advisor. It counts as other recommendation-style if the path contains words such as best, review, compare, ranked or tested. Everything else is treated as editorial or explainer content.

Which publications do AI engines cite for product recommendations?

Several national news brands are cited almost entirely for their shopping and recommendation pages. WSJ had 18 of the 50 most-cited financial services pages, all under wsj.com/buyside, with 2,539 citations. NBC News had 1,723 citations across six pages, all in its Select shopping section, and The New York Times had 493 across three Wirecutter pages.

Ten of the 15 most-cited pages in the study are buying guides by the path rule, led by security.org's best smart home guide with 2,655 citations. Table 5 at the end of the study lists all 15.

Is AI citing the WSJ newsroom or WSJ Buy Side?

In financial services, AI engines cite WSJ Buy Side, a shopping and recommendations section, far more than WSJ newsroom reporting. All 18 WSJ pages in the financial services top 50 sat under wsj.com/buyside and drew 2,539 citations, which is 37.8% of all top-50 finance citations and at least 72.6% of WSJ's 3,495 earned-media citations in that category across all engines.

The three most-cited WSJ pages were best financial advisors (684 citations), top flat-fee financial advisors (316) and best wealth management firms (233).

Buy Side is a separate recommendations site. Axios's launch report said in 2022 that Buy Side would have its own writers and editors, that its team would be completely separate from the newsroom, and that it launched with affiliate partners including Skimlinks, Red Ventures and Amazon. This study did not re-verify that structure today.

A brand that appears in a WSJ Buy Side guide has a placement in a recommendations section, which is not the same as a reported article in The Wall Street Journal's newsroom. This extends 5W's AI Engine Citation Gap study, which found that at least 78% of WSJ's ChatGPT citations in financial services sat under Buy Side. The other named sections in the data, including NBC Select, Wirecutter, Forbes Advisor and The Guardian's Filter, were identified only by URL path.

Do AI engines cite beauty reviews and shopping guides?

Yes. In beauty, nearly 8 in 10 top citations go to reviews and shopping guides: 79.4% of the 11,322 citations to the 50 most-cited beauty pages. Of those 50 pages, 36 are buying guides, and national news and magazine brands supplied many of them.

NBC News had five Select pages with 1,530 citations in the beauty top 50, and Elle had six pages with 1,080 citations, all best-of or review pages. Allure had 89% of its citations on recommendation-style pages across six pages.

The most-cited beauty page was NBC Select's best under-eye patches guide, with 795 citations, followed by Health.com's best lip balms page with 579 and Vogue Scandinavia's best under-eye patches page with 523. Beauty was also the one industry in the earlier AI Engine Citation Gap study where earned media was the largest source group, at 40.0% of citations.

Which industries do AI engines cite buying guides for most?

Beauty relied most on buying guides, at 79.4% of top-page citations, and supplements relied least, at 24.1%. The industries in between differ in where those guides sit.

How often do AI engines cite financial buying guides?

Financial services drew 65.0% of top-page citations to recommendation-style pages, and 45.0% sat in commerce sections. WSJ Buy Side's best financial advisors page led with 684 citations, and NerdWallet's best robo-advisors page had 374.

How often do AI engines cite tools and smart home guides?

Tools and retail drew 66.2% of top-page citations to recommendation-style pages but only 4.6% to commerce sections, because independent testers such as ProToolReviews run their own sites. Smart home was split almost evenly at 49.7%, and its single most-cited page, security.org's best smart home guide, had 2,655 citations, the most of any page in the study.

How often do AI engines cite supplement buying guides?

Supplements drew only 24.1% of top-page citations to recommendation-style pages, and the list is small, at 771 citations across 50 pages. The most-cited pages were explainers and journal articles, including ConsumerLab's counterfeit supplements page (37 citations) and a JAMA Network article (38).

Do buying guides get more AI citations than other pages?

Buying guides got more citations than their page count alone would predict. They were 51.6% of the 250 pages but 63.0% of the 39,739 citations, so the average buying guide drew about 194 citations against about 122 for an editorial or explainer page.

Source: 5W's analysis using Profound's tools. Page and citation shares use the path rule described in the classification section. The pooled citation share weights large industries more heavily than small ones.

The gap is positive in every industry, but it is largest in smart home, where a few very high pages, led by security.org, drive it. In tools and retail the two shares are nearly equal, so buying guides there were cited about as often as other pages.

Which publications do AI engines cite for explainers instead?

A smaller group of outlets is cited mostly for explainer pages, led by Wired in smart home. Wired's three pages in the smart home top 50 had 1,228 citations and none matched the buying-guide rules: how to choose a smart home ecosystem (471), how to set up a smart home (457) and what Matter is (300).

Kiplinger had 28% recommendation-style pages across six finance pages, and SmartAsset's three top pages, including its financial advisor cost page, had none. For these outlets, expert commentary and original data fit better than product pitches.

How do buying guides change consumer PR budgets?

Buying guides suggest that product PR and AI visibility are converging, because pages written for shoppers are among the pages AI engines cite most. Consumer PR campaigns have often kept product reviews, shopping guides, brand features and reputation coverage in separate lines. This data suggests the shopping-oriented placements deserve their own line in a plan aimed at AI visibility.

  • Send products to qualified reviewers and testing publications.
  • Build relationships with the editors who write buying guides and comparison pages, not only with news desks.
  • Keep product specifications, availability and pricing accurate and easy to find.
  • Map which publications AI engines repeatedly cite for specific buying questions in your category.
  • Track the exact URLs that appear in AI answers, not only publication names.

These are strategic implications of the data, not demonstrated causal effects. The study does not show that earning a buying-guide placement will cause an AI engine to recommend a brand.

How can PR teams appear in buying guides?

PR teams should treat each buying guide as a specific page with its own editor, and track it by URL. Five steps follow from the data.

  1. List the guide pages for your category by running the prompts buyers use in each engine and recording the exact URLs cited.
  2. Pitch the guide's editors, not the outlet's news desk, with product access, test data, specifications and a clear disclosure of any relationship.
  3. Check which section of each outlet the citation sits in, since a commerce section and a newsroom can have different editors and different rules.
  4. For explainer-led outlets such as Wired and Kiplinger, offer expert commentary and original data instead of a product pitch.
  5. Repeat the URL check on a schedule, because a guide is one page that can change or drop out of citations.

Teams working on this can start with 5W's AI visibility agency practice or its generative engine optimization services. Industry teams can also see 5W's financial services PR practice and beauty PR practice.

How does this study compare with earlier 5W research?

This study looks one level below 5W's earlier citation research, at the pages themselves. The AI Engine Citation Gap study ranked outlets by engine and industry and found that ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews cite different outlets. Here the question is which pages are cited and what kind of page each one is.

Who AI Cites Now maps citation sources across engines, and this study adds the page-type view for five industries.

How did 5W classify buying guides?

5W classified each page from its URL path alone, using data it already collects. The data comes from 5W's analysis using Profound's tools and covers January 1 to November 7, 2026.

  • The five tracked categories are financial services, beauty and skincare, tools and home improvement retail, smart home, and supplements.
  • For each category, the study took the 50 pages with the most earned-media citations, with all tracked engines combined. These pages hold 17% to 35% of each industry's earned-media citations.
  • A citation is one cited URL in one tracked answer, so counts are citations, not answers.
  • Gemini returned no citation data in the categories checked, so combined results cover every engine that returned data.
How pages were classified

A page is a commerce section page if its URL contains a known shopping path: buyside, select, underscored, wirecutter, personal-shopper, thefilter, shopping, picks, forbes.com/advisor or businessinsider.com/guides. Otherwise it is recommendation-style if the part of the URL after the domain contains best, review, versus, compare, ranked, ranking, top, tested, showdown or picks. Everything else is editorial or explainer. A few pages with conceptual comparison wording, such as active versus passive investing, were set to editorial by hand.

Keyword matching can misclassify pages, so 5W also reviewed all 250 URLs by hand for pages that look like roundups or comparisons but lack those words. That review flagged 18 pages: 3 in financial services, 4 in beauty, 9 in tools and retail and 2 in smart home. Adding them raises the buying-guide share of citations from 63.0% to 70.7%, and the share of pages from 51.6% to 58.8%. The review used URL paths only, because the pages themselves were not opened.

The tracked categories were built for ongoing brand monitoring, not for this study. The results describe those categories and should not be read as a measure of all AI answers.

What are the limits of this AI citation study?

This study is a first page-level read built on existing monitoring data, and several questions remain open.

  • The study covers only the 50 most-cited pages per industry, so it says nothing about the long tail of pages below them, and the 63% describes this selected group.
  • Pages are classified by URL path rules, and pages without those words, including some real buying guides, count as editorial unless the manual slug review flagged them.
  • Results combine all engines that returned data. The engine split is in the earlier AI Engine Citation Gap study.
  • The smart home list includes five pages that are off topic for smart home buyers, with 887 citations, or 6.2% of that sample. They were left in and counted as editorial.
  • Supplements is a small sample, and one category represents each industry.
  • The description of WSJ Buy Side rests on 2022 launch reporting, and other commerce sections were identified by URL path only.
  • The study does not test whether a cited page discusses the brand an engine recommends, and it shows association only.

Which are the 15 most-cited pages in the study?

The 15 most-cited pages in the study drew between 418 and 2,655 citations each, and 10 of them are buying guides by the path rule. Table 5 lists them.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of AI citations go to shopping guides?

Shopping guides and other buying guides took 63% of citations to the 50 most-cited earned-media pages in each of five industries. The share ranged from 24.1% in supplements to 79.4% in beauty, and it does not describe all AI citations.

Does AI cite WSJ Buy Side or the WSJ newsroom?

In financial services, all 18 WSJ pages in the top 50 sat under wsj.com/buyside. At its 2022 launch, Buy Side was described as having its own editorial team, separate from the newsroom.

Which industry has the most AI citations to buying guides?

Beauty has the most, at 79.4% of top-page citations, followed by tools and retail at 66.2%, financial services at 65.0%, smart home at 49.7% and supplements at 24.1%.

Do buying guides get more AI citations than other pages?

Yes, on average. Buying guides were 51.6% of the pages and 63.0% of the citations, or about 194 citations per page against about 122 for other pages.

How reliable is the buying guide classification?

The path rule gives 63.0%, and a manual review of all 250 URLs raises it to 70.7% when 18 likely roundups are added. Neither method opened the pages themselves.

Does a buying guide citation mean AI recommends a brand?

No. The study counts citations and does not test whether a cited page discusses the brand that an engine recommends.
