AI Engine Citation Gap: WSJ Cited 2,157 Times vs 130

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews cite different outlets, and the pattern changes by industry. WSJ's finance citations come mostly from Buy Side.

Published November 7, 2026

The AI engine citation gap is the difference in which outlets ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews cite, and this November 2026 audit finds it changes by industry. In financial services, ChatGPT cited WSJ 2,157 times, Google AI Overviews 889 times and Perplexity 130 times. At least 78% of WSJ's ChatGPT citations point to its Buy Side commerce pages, not its newsroom. Data covers January 1 to November 7, 2026.

Source: 5W's analysis using Profound's tools, citations tagged earned media. Share is a domain's citations divided by its industry's total earned-media citations: financial services 36,563, beauty 42,440, tools and retail 39,212, smart home 40,769 and supplements 3,858. Type is a 5W analyst classification.

The same outlet can rank very differently by engine. Table 2 shows the three most-cited domains on ChatGPT and on Perplexity in each industry.

Source: 5W's analysis using Profound's tools, citations tagged earned media. Supplements volume is low, so its counts are small.

Only three outlets appeared in the top three on both engines in any industry: Kiplinger in finance, ProToolReviews in tools and Wired in smart home. Google AI Overviews, pulled for financial services only, ranked Investopedia (1,556), SmartAsset (1,396), NerdWallet (1,287), WSJ (889) and Kiplinger (502) as its top five.

Why does WSJ get 2,157 ChatGPT citations but 130 on Perplexity?

WSJ's finance citations come mostly from ChatGPT, and mostly from its Buy Side commerce pages. ChatGPT supplied 2,157 of WSJ's 3,495 earned-media citations in financial services (62%), Google AI Overviews supplied 889 and Perplexity supplied 130. The remaining 319 came from the other tracked engines.

Every WSJ page among ChatGPT's 50 most-cited finance pages sat under wsj.com/buyside. Those 22 pages account for 1,687 citations, which is at least 78% of WSJ's ChatGPT total. The true share could be higher because pages below the top 50 were not counted.

Buy Side is WSJ's commerce section at wsj.com/buyside. Axios's launch report said in 2022 that Buy Side would have its own writers and editors, that its team would be completely separate from the newsroom, and that it launched with affiliate partners including Skimlinks, Red Ventures and Amazon. This audit did not re-verify that structure today.

A WSJ newsroom story and a Buy Side review are therefore different placements, and in this category ChatGPT cites the second far more often. SmartAsset shows the reverse pattern: it was Perplexity's most-cited finance domain with 1,229 citations and received 349 on ChatGPT.

Do news brands or review sites get cited more?

News and magazine brands take the largest share of citations only in beauty, where they accounted for 69% of citations to the listed domains. In tools, finance and smart home, review, comparison and niche sites took 57%, 53% and 42%.

5W sorted each listed domain into a type. News or general-interest magazine brands include Allure and NBC News. Specialist or trade publications include CNET and InvestmentNews. Review or affiliate-style sites include SmartAsset and ProToolReviews. Publisher commerce arms, in this audit, means WSJ Buy Side.

Pooling the citations in all five lists (89,457 citations), news and magazine brands took about 30% and specialist or trade titles about 26%. A simple average of the five industry rows in Table 3 gives 23% and 29%, because small lists such as supplements count equally in an average but add few citations to the pool.

Beauty supplies 17,228 of the 26,924 pooled news-brand citations (64%), so a single national-versus-trade answer would hide the differences between industries.

How much of what AI cites is earned media?

Earned media was a minority of citations in every industry, ranging from 13% in supplements to 40% in beauty. Table 4 shows the mix of source types.

Source: 5W's analysis using Profound's tools, January 1 to November 7, 2026. "Other" is Profound's catch-all and includes retailers, product pages and reference sites. Reddit and YouTube are counted as social. Wikipedia cannot be separated from "Other". Rows do not sum to 100% for two reasons: Profound's competition and PR wire categories (5.4% or less combined in every industry) are not shown, and Profound can count one citation under both its page category and its domain category, which pushes smart home above 100%.

Institutions were the largest named source type in supplements at 39%, and brand-owned sites took 10.4% of smart home citations, more than in any other industry audited.

The weight of third-party sources over brand pages matches academic work. A University of Toronto study from September 2025 found that AI search showed a systematic bias toward earned media over brand-owned and social content in consumer ranking prompts. Its earned category covers independent media, review and comparison sites, the same mix found in Profound's earned-media tag. The two taxonomies differ, so their percentages are not directly comparable to the figures above.

Do the engines draw on the same number of outlets?

No. ChatGPT cited fewer distinct earned-media domains than Perplexity in financial services, beauty and smart home, and more in tools and retail. Table 5 counts the domains with at least one earned-media citation.

Source: 5W's analysis using Profound's tools. Counts are domains with at least one earned-media citation in the window, as reported by Profound for each engine filter.

In financial services, ChatGPT drew on 246 earned-media domains while all engines together drew on 1,284. A narrow ChatGPT pool is consistent with the heavy concentration on WSJ and Kiplinger seen in Table 2.

How concentrated are AI citations in a few outlets?

In financial services, ten domains hold about 47% of earned-media citations. WSJ, SmartAsset, Investopedia, Kiplinger, NerdWallet, Forbes, LegalClarity, InvestmentNews, annuity.com and CNBC together account for 17,268 of the category's 36,563 citations.

Concentration was not calculated for the other four industries because only the top 30 domains were pulled for each.

What did each industry show?

Profound's catch-all Other category was the largest group in financial services, tools and retail, smart home and supplements, and earned media was the largest group only in beauty.

What did financial services show?

Financial services was led by commerce and review pages rather than newsrooms. Across all source types, YouTube had 5,711 citations, more than any single earned-media outlet, and fidelity.com drew 2,342. WSJ Buy Side, SmartAsset, Investopedia, Kiplinger and NerdWallet led the earned-media list. True trade titles in the list included InvestmentNews (596 citations), Kitces (502), WealthManagement (424) and FinTech Global (166), while national business brands included CNBC (562), Barron's (550), Business Insider (370) and MarketWatch (325). Teams in this industry can see 5W's financial services PR practice.

What did beauty show?

Beauty was the industry where general-interest news and magazine brands led, and where earned media was the largest group at 40.0% against 35.4% for Other. Allure, NBC News and Elle each had more than 1,600 citations. Perplexity's list differed from ChatGPT's, with Elle, Healthline and Cosmopolitan on top. Teams in this industry can see 5W's beauty PR practice.

What did tools and retail show?

Tools and retail leaned on review sites and on non-publisher domains. Reddit, YouTube and Amazon ranked first to third among all domains by citation share, with 10,105, 12,582 and 4,298 citations. Among earned-media domains, independent review sites such as ProToolReviews, EngineerFix and ToolGuyd ranked beside Bob Vila and Popular Mechanics.

What did smart home show?

Smart home had the largest pool of earned-media domains, 1,710, and the highest share of brand-owned citations at 10.4%. The three top-ranked domains of any type were smartthings.com (21,944 citations), google.com (18,696) and youtube.com (13,156). Technology publications such as CNET, Wired and ZDNet led the earned-media list. Teams in this industry can see 5W's consumer technology PR practice.

What did supplements show?

Supplements was led by institutions among named source types. Institutions made up 38.9% of citations, just behind the catch-all Other category at 40.9%, with nih.gov at 2,776 citations and fda.gov at 1,397. Earned media was 13.1%, and JAMA Network, a peer-reviewed journal, led the earned-media list at 508 citations. Teams in this industry can see 5W's supplements marketing and PR practice.

How does this audit compare with earlier research?

This audit complements existing research by naming outlets within industries and by engine. Muck Rack's October 2026 What Is AI Reading? release covers ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, with more than 40 million AI responses and 207 million citations in 2026. It puts journalism's share of citations at 22%, down from about 27% in May. Muck Rack publishes the full report at generativepulse.ai/report.

That release also reports that only 212 domains were cited by all four providers in its September collection of 1,020 prompts. Its earned category includes academic, government, encyclopedic and third-party corporate sources alongside journalism.

This audit does not repeat that work. It ranks named outlets within five industries, compares ChatGPT and Perplexity outlet by outlet, and checks one outlet's citations page by page. Earlier 5W research, including Who AI Cites Now, the Citation Source Audit and AI Citation Sources, maps citation sources across engines. The AI-Trusted Publications Index scores 50 outlets and the Trade Press Index covers trade titles.

What should communications teams do with these findings?

Communications teams should plan placements engine by engine, industry by industry and page by page.

  1. Track citations on each engine separately before choosing target outlets. The ChatGPT and Perplexity top-three lists shared at most one outlet in each industry.
  2. Check which section of an outlet is being cited. A commerce, advisor or review section can account for most of an outlet's citations, as WSJ Buy Side does on ChatGPT in finance.
  3. Match outlet type to industry. National news and magazine brands lead in beauty, while review and specialist sites take a large share in finance, tools and smart home.
  4. Treat earned media as one part of the picture. Institutions, social platforms, retailers and brand-owned pages made up most citations in every industry audited.
  5. Measure placements by whether they are cited, using the same engines and categories each time, and repeat the check on a schedule because engines add and retire models.

Teams that want help running this check can start with 5W's AI visibility agency practice, its generative engine optimization services or its digital PR practice.

How was the audit done?

The audit reads citation data that 5W already collects, not a new set of prompts. The data comes from 5W's analysis using Profound's tools and covers January 1 to November 7, 2026.

  • The five tracked categories are financial services, beauty and skincare, tools and home improvement retail, smart home, and supplements.
  • Profound tracks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI and Grok. Gemini returned no citation data in the categories checked, so engine-level results cover ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and combined results cover every engine that returned data.
  • A citation is one cited URL in one tracked answer, so counts are citations, not answers.
  • The lists pulled are the top 30 earned-media domains per industry (top 50 for finance) and the top 10 or 15 domains per engine.
  • Domain types are 5W analyst judgment, and WSJ Buy Side was checked page by page.
How domains were classified

Profound's earned-media tag includes review, comparison and affiliate-style sites as well as newsrooms. To answer a question about journalism, 5W sorted each listed domain into one of seven types: news or magazine brand, specialist or trade publication, mixed, publisher commerce arm, review or affiliate-style site, niche or small site, and academic journal. Forbes is classed as mixed because its Advisor pages appear among the most-cited finance pages. A different reviewer could classify borderline domains differently.

The tracked categories were built for ongoing brand monitoring, not for this study. The results describe those categories and should not be read as a measure of all AI answers.

What are the limits of this audit?

This audit is a first measurement built on existing monitoring data, and several analyses are not included.

  • The sample is five industry categories that 5W already monitors, not a prompt set designed for this study. The number and wording of the prompts behind each category were not part of this analysis.
  • One category represents each industry. Other monitored categories in the same industries returned no data for the window, and supplements has a small sample.
  • Gemini returned no citation data, so no Gemini ranking is reported. Google AI Overviews is shown for financial services only.
  • Rankings use partial lists, so combined totals are lower bounds. Distinct prompts per outlet and answer-level percentages were not collected.
  • Domain types are analyst judgment, and only WSJ Buy Side was verified page by page.
  • The description of WSJ Buy Side rests on 2022 launch reporting and was not re-verified for this audit.
  • Whether a cited article discusses the recommended brand, and article age, were not tested.
  • The audit shows association only. It does not show that any citation caused a brand to be recommended.

Who wrote this audit and how should it be cited?

Ronn Torossian, Founder and Chairman of 5W, authored this audit, which 5W published on November 7, 2026 as part of its AI visibility research. He is the author of the book For Immediate Release, a former partner and chief marketing officer of JetSmarter, and a guest lecturer at Harvard, NYU and other universities.

Frequently asked questions

Which outlet do AI engines cite most in financial services?

WSJ had the most earned-media citations in financial services at 3,495. About 62% of them came from ChatGPT, and Perplexity cited WSJ only 130 times.

Are WSJ's AI citations from its newsroom?

At least 78% of WSJ's ChatGPT citations in finance point to wsj.com/buyside pages. At its 2022 launch, Buy Side was described as a commerce site with its own editorial team, separate from the newsroom.

Do AI engines cite news outlets or review sites more?

It depends on the industry. News and magazine brands took 69% of listed citations in beauty, while review and niche sites took 57% in tools and retail and 53% in finance.

How much of what AI cites is earned media?

Earned-media sources were 13% to 40% of citations across the five industries audited. Institutions, social platforms, retailers and brand-owned pages made up most of the rest.

Why is there no Gemini ranking in this audit?

Gemini returned no citation data in the categories checked, so the audit reports no Gemini ranking. Google AI Overviews is shown for financial services as a Google comparison.

Does a citation mean AI will recommend a brand?

No. The audit counts citations and does not test whether a cited article discusses the brand that an engine recommends.

How many outlets does the audit cover?

The audit ranks the top 30 earned-media domains in four industries and the top 50 in financial services. Those lists come from 370 to 1,710 earned-media domains per industry.
