5W Publishes Study 08 of The Reputation Index: How AI Engines Render the 22 Power 4 Head Coaches

Kirby Smart leads. Bill Belichick lands at #2 in his first month at UNC. Matt Rhule anchors the bottom. The most volatile cohort 5W has measured to date.

Kirby Smart leads. Bill Belichick lands at #2 in his first month at UNC. Matt Rhule anchors the bottom. The cohort is the most volatile 5W has measured to date.

5W AI Communications has published Study 08 of nine in The 5W Reputation Index — the College Football Coaches study, a composite ranking of the 22 Power 4 and Notre Dame head coaches active in the 2025 season, measured by how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews render each principal across sixty-plus retrieval-intent prompts per engine.

Kirby Smart of Georgia leads the cohort at composite 78, anchored by two national championships and the sport's deepest institutionally-rendered SEC portrait. Bill Belichick of North Carolina lands at composite 76 in his first month as a college head coach — the study's clearest case of reputational inheritance, where a 24-year NFL portrait lifts a first-year college composite by an estimated 20-plus points beyond a comparable first-year peer. Matt Rhule of Nebraska trails at composite 48, with the 2022 Carolina Panthers firing surfacing in 65 percent of identity prompts.

The most volatile cohort in the series

The College Football Coaches study is the most volatile cohort 5W has measured across the eight studies published to date. Engine portraits update faster in this cohort than in any other sector. A coach's portrait can shift 15-plus composite points across a single season — a rate no executive cohort in the Index approaches.

The cohort's Control mean of 53 is the lowest of any sector measured across the Index. College coaches structurally cede narrative to athletic departments, conference media days, broadcast partners, and recruiting press — the cohort's most-actionable shared infrastructure gap.

Top of the cohort

Kirby Smart, Georgia — 78. The clearest program-builder portrait in the sport. Engines render Smart through the December 2015 Alabama-staff hire, the 2021 and 2022 national championships, and sustained recruiting dominance.

Bill Belichick, North Carolina — 76. Completeness of 90 — the highest in the cohort, tied with Warren Buffett for the highest score in the entire Reputation Index — built from the Patriots tenure, six Super Bowls, and 333 NFL wins. The +20 lift is engine memory of the NFL portrait, not UNC results.

Ryan Day, Ohio State — 68. A stable program-builder portrait with institutional Ohio State framing.

Kalen DeBoer, Alabama — 68. Partial reputational inheritance. DeBoer inherits institutional Alabama framing without inheriting Nick Saban's individual portrait.

Bottom of the cohort

Matt Rhule, Nebraska — 48. The clearest case of negative reputational inheritance. The 2022 Panthers firing surfaces in 65 percent of identity prompts and compresses positive Temple and Baylor framing.

Manny Diaz, Duke — 48. Composite sits low on limited engine material relative to the top of the cohort.

Hugh Freeze, Auburn — 50. The clearest case of negative anchor persistence across a successful intervening tenure. The 2017 Ole Miss departure surfaces in 75 percent of identity prompts despite the five-year Liberty rebuild.

Sherrone Moore, Michigan — 53. The pending NCAA Notice of Allegations related to the 2023 Michigan sign-stealing investigation continues to shape the engine portrait. The Index does not adjudicate the merits.

The Saban reference panel

Nick Saban is not included in the 22-coach composite ranking. Saban retired from Alabama in January 2024. His engine portrait remains the highest in college football history at composite 84, with Completeness of 92 — the highest college-football score in engine memory. The 2024 transition to ESPN College GameDay has produced active engine portrait refresh. Engines continue to render Saban as current despite the operational retirement — and continue to render Saban as Alabama head coach in 22 percent of "Alabama football coach" prompts as of mid-2026, the study's clearest case of engine memory lagging behind a high-profile coaching transition.

Notable gaps between engine portrait and public record

The Belichick first-year inheritance test. Belichick at 76 composite in his first month as a college coach is the clearest test of reputational inheritance measured in the series. A comparable first-year head coach with no NFL portrait would render at approximately 50 to 55 composite.

The Deion Sanders Completeness paradox. Sanders scores 76 on Completeness — the highest among coaches with five or fewer Power 4 seasons — built from NFL and MLB playing careers, broadcasting, Jackson State, and Colorado. Completeness does not translate to Sentiment (52). The depth surfaces achievements and controversies in equal weight.

The Control ceiling. The highest Control score in the cohort is Smart's 74. The cohort mean of 53 is the lowest of any sector measured across the Reputation Index.

Series context

College Football Coaches is Study 08 of nine in The 5W Reputation Index. The series continues with Family Office Principals. Prior studies cover NFL Owners, NBA Governors, MLB Owners, the Cross-League Top 50, PE Founders, Hedge Fund Principals, and Media Chiefs.

About The 5W Reputation Index

The 5W Reputation Index measures how leading AI systems render named principals across sixty-plus retrieval-intent prompts per engine. Scores are directional estimates derived from modeled engine outputs and supplementary web-search verification. The Index reflects engine-rendered reputation only. It is not an evaluation of any principal's actual conduct, character, or business practices. The Index does not adjudicate the merits of any pending litigation, allegation, or contested matter referenced in the source record.
