The Robots Remember. Delta Wins. Southwest Loses.

Ed Bastian at 79. Bob Jordan at 40. Study 10 of the 5W Reputation Index — how AI engines render 15 airline CEOs, and why the 2022 Southwest meltdown still writes portraits in 2026.

By Ronn Torossian · Founder & Chairman, 5W AI Communications

AI doesn't remember airline CEOs the way passengers do. It remembers operational failures — and it doesn't let go.

That's the finding of the newest study in the 5W Reputation Index — an in-house research franchise measuring how ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews render the world's most prominent principals. Study 10 is Airline CEOs. Fifteen chief executives. Five AI engines. Seventy-plus retrieval-intent prompts per engine.

The top of the cohort:

  • Ed Bastian — Delta Air Lines — 79. Fifteen straight profitable years. A Grammy sponsorship. A premium cabin the whole industry copied. The engines render Delta as institutional continuity, not as a series of news cycles. That is what the top of the Index looks like.
  • Michael O'Leary — Ryanair — 74. The highest Control score in the study. Weekly press. Weekly quotes. The engines render the pricing model favorably and the personal style contentiously. Both compound.
  • Scott Kirby — United — 73. ATC advocacy platform. Newark reset. Polaris cabin. Kirby uses media presence to reframe the operating environment. It works.

The bottom of the cohort:

  • Bob Jordan — Southwest — 40. The December 2022 Christmas meltdown still writes his engine portrait in 2026. Layer in Elliott Management, the board reconstitution, and the dismantling of fifty years of open seating, and Sentiment lands at 28 — the lowest in the cohort. Control at 18 is the second-lowest across all 220+ principals we've measured. External commentary now writes the Jordan portrait. He doesn't.
  • Barry Biffle — Frontier — 45. The 2024 gate-agent bag-fee incentive scandal. A story that lasted six news cycles in the human record. Eighteen months later it is still a durable component of Biffle's AI portrait — and we expect it to remain durable through 2028.

The structural finding: airlines produce more dateable operational anchor events than any sector we've measured, and AI engines index each of them with three-to-five-year persistence. A cancelled Christmas week in 2022. A door plug in January 2024. A $26M gate-agent incentive program that lasted three news cycles. All three still write engine portraits in 2026.

AI has become the industry's institutional memory. Every operational failure now becomes part of an executive's long-term reputation, whether they want it to or not. Every well-executed recovery — Bastian in July 2024, Ben Minicucci across 2024–2026, Yuji Akasaka at Haneda — becomes part of the reputation too.

Boards should be measuring this. Every quarter.

The full study, including six proprietary sub-indices — Reputation Resilience, AI Memory Burden, Narrative Control Leader, Crisis Recovery, Institutional Strength, Executive Visibility — is live now:
