Media Pitch

Media Pitch
Share:

A media pitch is a targeted outreach — typically an email or phone call — from a PR professional to a specific journalist pitching a story idea. The pitch proposes a narrative angle, offers expert access, or provides data the journalist might publish. It's personalized to the journalist's beat and publication and speaks to their specific interests.

A pitch differs fundamentally from a press release. The press release is broadcast — sent to everyone on the media list simultaneously, in formal journalistic language. A pitch is one-to-one — crafted for a single reporter, conversational in tone, and designed to start a relationship or conversation rather than hand off a completed story.

The anatomy of a strong pitch: (1) Subject line that signals relevance to their beat. (2) Opening that demonstrates familiarity with their recent work. (3) A specific story angle or news hook. (4) Why the reporter should cover it now. (5) Offered access — expert interview, data, exclusive angle. (6) Clear next step.

Pitching is where relationship-building happens. Journalists receive hundreds of pitches daily. A pitch that stands out gets opened because it's clearly been written for that reporter, not blasted to a list. It pairs specificity with brevity. It offers something valuable — not just a request for coverage.

Media pitch strategy includes tracking which reporters cover which angles, personalizing to their beat, and following up appropriately without being aggressive.
