AI-Era Term

Recommendation Position

The rank position of a brand in AI-generated category recommendations. When an engine returns a list of suggested vendors or solutions, position 1 carries dramatically more weight than position 5.

What it is not

Recommendation Position is not Recommendation Rate. Rate measures how often a brand is recommended; Position measures where in the order it appears when recommended. The two metrics together produce a visibility-weighted view of category presence.

Why it matters

Recommendation Position translates Recommendation Rate into a visibility-weighted metric. A brand recommended in position 1 across 30% of prompts outperforms a brand recommended in position 5 across 60% — supporting buyer discovery, category authority claims, and commercial discoverability at the point of decision.

Implementation

Operationally, position tracking requires extraction of ordered recommendation lists with brand identification at each rank. Reported as average position across prompts, top-3 rate, and top-1 rate. 5W tracks Recommendation Position as a sub-metric of Recommendation Rate.

Common failure modes

  • Counting any mention regardless of recommendation order
  • Position data lost in unstructured response capture
  • Treating position 5 as equivalent to position 1
  • No competitive position tracking
