What Is AEO? A Guide to Answer Engine Optimization
Share:

What is AEO? Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring and sourcing content so that AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews can find it, extract a clear answer from it, and cite it. AEO targets the answer a user reads, not the ranked list of links a search engine returns.

What does this AEO guide cover?

What is the short version of AEO?

AEO means writing and sourcing a page so an answer engine can lift a correct, attributable answer from it. The work has three parts: put a direct answer at the top of the page, back it with a named source or number, and make sure the same facts appear on the third-party sites the engines already cite.

No agency or tool can guarantee that an engine will name a brand. AEO raises the odds and makes progress measurable.

How does an answer engine turn a question into an answer?

A retrieval-based answer engine rewrites a user's question into one or more search queries, retrieves candidate pages, passes selected passages to a language model, and the model writes an answer that may cite those pages. Some assistants also answer from training data alone, without retrieving anything.

That sequence explains what AEO changes. The page has to be retrieved, which depends on how well its meaning matches the question. Retrieval systems compare meaning, not just keywords, a mechanism covered in the guide to vector embeddings and AEO. The passage then has to be usable, which means it states a complete answer in a sentence or two.

How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?

AEO optimizes for the answer a person reads, SEO optimizes for the ranked list of links, and GEO optimizes for visibility inside generative engine responses. In practice AEO and GEO describe overlapping work, and SEO fundamentals such as crawlable pages still apply to both.

DisciplineWhat it optimizes forTypical unit of success
SEORanking of pages in a list of linksPosition and clicks for a query
AEOSelection of a page as the source of an answerCitation or mention in an answer
GEOVisibility of a source across a generated responseShare of a response attributed to the source

5W's GEO versus SEO research compares the two approaches in more detail.

Why does AEO matter now?

AEO matters because people increasingly read an AI-written answer instead of clicking through to a website. A Pew Research Center analysis published July 22, 2025 found that Google users clicked a traditional result link in 8 percent of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15 percent of visits when none appeared.

The same Pew study examined 68,879 Google searches from 900 U.S. adults in March 2025. Users clicked a link inside the AI summary itself in just 1 percent of visits. Pew also found that 60 percent of searches beginning with a question word such as who, what, when or why produced an AI summary, so question-shaped queries are where answer engines appear most.

Analyst forecasts point the same way. Alan Antin, a vice president analyst at Gartner, said in a February 19, 2024 Gartner press release that generative AI solutions are becoming substitute answer engines, and Gartner predicted that traditional search engine volume would drop 25 percent by 2026. That figure is a forecast, and this guide does not verify whether the drop occurred.

What does research say makes content more likely to be cited?

Peer-reviewed research found that adding citations, quotations from relevant sources and statistics to a page raised its visibility in generative engine responses. Pranjal Aggarwal and co-authors from Princeton University, IIT Delhi and other institutions reported the result in a paper presented at the ACM KDD 2024 conference, titled GEO: Generative Engine Optimization.

The authors tested optimization methods on GEO-bench, a benchmark of 10,000 queries across domains. They reported visibility gains of up to 40 percent, and a test on Perplexity.ai showed gains of up to 37 percent. They also found that the effect varied by domain, so a method that helps one category can do little in another.

The mechanism is straightforward. An engine builds its answer from retrieved passages, and a passage that already contains a named source and a specific number gives the model an attributable sentence to reuse.

Which sources do AI answers actually cite?

AI answers cite a small set of sources per category, and the set differs by industry. The Pew study found that Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most frequently cited sources in Google AI summaries, together making up 15 percent of all sources listed, and that .gov sites made up 6 percent of AI summary sources versus 2 percent of standard results.

5W's published category research shows the same concentration in individual industries.

The practical point is that AEO cannot be done on a brand's own site alone. If an engine draws a category's answers from three publishers, the facts about a brand have to be accurate on those publishers.

How do you start AEO in six steps?

A team starts AEO by collecting buyer questions, checking which sources the engines cite for each, and then fixing its own pages and its third-party coverage in that order. These six steps follow that sequence.

  1. Collect the 25 to 50 questions buyers ask, from sales calls, support tickets and Search Console queries. Question-word queries are the ones most likely to trigger an AI summary, per Pew.
  2. Run each question in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and record which domains each engine cites. Save the answers with the date.
  3. Put a 40 to 80 word direct answer at the top of the page that targets each question. The median AI summary in Pew's data was 67 words, so an answer of that length fits the format.
  4. Add named, dated evidence to that answer: a statistic with its source, a quotation from a named person, or a link to the primary document.
  5. Get the same facts stated on the third-party pages the engines cited in step 2, through earned coverage, review profiles, directory listings and reference pages.
  6. Keep entity facts consistent across every page: company name, category, location, pricing and founding date. Conflicting facts are one reason an engine describes a brand wrongly, as 5W's piece on when AI gets a company wrong explains.

How do you measure AEO results?

AEO results are measured by tracking a fixed list of prompts over time and counting how often a brand is cited, mentioned and described correctly. Clicks alone understate the effect, since Pew found that users rarely click inside AI summaries.

MetricWhat it countsHow to collect it
Citation shareShare of tracked prompts where the brand's domain is citedRun the same prompt list weekly in each engine
Mention rateShare of answers that name the brand, cited or notSame prompt list, manual or tool-assisted review
Answer accuracyShare of answers that describe the brand correctlyCompare each answer against a fact sheet
AI referral sessionsVisits that arrive from an AI assistantReferral source report in the analytics platform
Impressions and positionVisibility for question queries in searchGoogle Search Console, filtered to question queries

An AI citation audit produces the baseline for the first three rows, and GEO optimization services cover the ongoing work.

What are the most common AEO mistakes?

The most common AEO mistakes are writing for keywords instead of questions, burying the answer below the introduction, stating numbers without a named source, blocking AI crawlers in the robots.txt file, and judging results by clicks alone. Each one either keeps the page from being retrieved or leaves the engine without a usable, attributable sentence.

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the practice of making content easy for AI answer engines to retrieve, extract and cite.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

AEO and GEO overlap heavily, and most programs do the same work under either name. GEO comes from the 2023 research paper on generative engines, while AEO is the broader term for optimizing to be the source of an answer.

Does AEO replace SEO?

AEO does not replace SEO. Crawlable, fast, well-structured pages are still the starting point, and the pages that rank in search are often the same pages answer engines retrieve.

How long does AEO take to show results?

No one can promise a timeline. Engines that retrieve live pages can reflect a page change sooner than assistants that answer from training data, so the practical approach is to run the same prompt list weekly and watch the trend.

Can an agency guarantee citations in ChatGPT?

No agency can guarantee that ChatGPT, Gemini or any other engine will cite a brand. Engines choose their own sources, so a credible provider commits to a method and a measurement plan, not to an outcome.
