BNPL AI Visibility: Affirm and Klarna Statistically Tied

5WPR's BNPL & Consumer Credit AI Visibility Index 2026 measured 288 answers across Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude for 24 buy now, pay later prompts run on September 14, 2026. Affirm appeared in 69.8 percent of those answers and Klarna in 68.4 percent, a gap too small to call a winner.

Which BNPL brand appears most in AI answers?

Affirm was named in 201 of the 288 returned answers in the BNPL & Consumer Credit AI Visibility Index, a 69.8 percent appearance rate with a 95 percent interval of 64.3 to 74.8 percent. Klarna followed at 68.4 percent, with an interval of 62.8 to 73.5 percent. The two intervals overlap, so the study does not establish a clear leader between them.

Why it works: Overlapping 95 percent Wilson intervals mean the observed 1.4 point gap between Affirm and Klarna falls inside the margin the sample size can support, per the 5WPR BNPL & Consumer Credit AI Visibility Index 2026 methodology published September 14, 2026.

Do brand websites supply most of the cited evidence?

No. CNBC was cited in 53.1 percent of the 288 evidence backed answers, more than any brand's own domain, according to the 5WPR BNPL & Consumer Credit AI Visibility Index 2026. Forbes followed at 49.7 percent and Credit Karma at 34 percent. Shopify Inc. posted the category's highest owned domain citation rate at 30.9 percent despite an appearance rate of only 6.6 percent.

Why it works: When independent publishers carry more structured, current data than a brand's own product pages, AI engines pull the fact from the publisher instead, a pattern that holds across the evidence backed answers in each of 5WPR's four fintech segment studies.

How much do the four engines disagree on BNPL brands?

Perplexity named Affirm in 95.8 percent of its 72 answers, while Claude named it in 31.9 percent, a 64 point spread for the same brand on the same day, per the 5WPR BNPL & Consumer Credit AI Visibility Index 2026. Splitit Ltd. appeared in 68.1 percent of Perplexity's answers and zero percent of Claude's 72 answers.

Why it works: Perplexity's sonar-pro model, OpenAI's search tool, Google's search grounding and Anthropic's web search tool each retrieve from different sources and apply different ranking logic, so identical prompts return different brand sets across engines, according to the study's methodology.

What should a BNPL brand check first in this data?

Check owned domain citation rate before appearance rate, since a brand can lead on one and trail on the other in the same study, as Shopify Inc. and Affirm each demonstrate in the 5WPR BNPL & Consumer Credit AI Visibility Index 2026. Check each engine separately rather than a blended average, since Splitit Ltd.'s zero percent Claude rate would not surface in a four-engine average alone.

Why it works: A blended appearance rate can mask a complete absence in one engine, which only becomes visible when the four engine specific rates are read individually, per the same report's engine breakdown tables.

How does BNPL compare with the rest of the fintech picture?

Affirm and Klarna's near tie stands out against the other three 5WPR fintech segment studies, where Stripe led decisively: 80.5 percent appearance in the Payments & Processors AI Visibility Index 2026 and 63.9 percent in the Fintech B2B Infrastructure AI Visibility Index 2026. BNPL is the one fintech segment in the combined Fintech AI Visibility Index 2026 where no single brand has separated itself statistically at the top.

Why it works: A category with several brands offering close product substitutes, as BNPL does with installment plans from Affirm, Klarna, Sezzle, PayPal and Zip, produces more overlapping demand language across prompts, which spreads appearance more evenly than in categories with one dominant infrastructure provider, according to the four 5WPR fintech studies.

Affirm and Klarna's statistical tie leaves the BNPL category open at the top. The brand that builds the stronger citation profile with CNBC, Forbes and Credit Karma, alongside its own site, has the clearer path to a durable lead.
