The Wine AI Visibility Index 2026: What Brands Should Know

5W's newest AI Visibility Index measured 268 AI-generated answers across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity and found that Domaine de la Romanée-Conti leads wine brands in appearance at 36.9%, yet its own website supplied zero percent of the citations behind those mentions.

The study separates two metrics that are routinely treated as one and the same: how often an AI engine names a brand, and how often the evidence behind that naming actually traces back to the brand itself. Across the wine category, those two numbers came apart more sharply, and more consistently, than in almost any prior study in this research series, and the gap holds important implications for any consumer brand trying to understand what "AI visibility" actually means in practice.

What did the Wine AI Visibility Index measure?

The study ran 24 stratified consumer prompts three times each across four engines, covering demand ranging from "best value wine brands" to "which investment-grade wine brands have the strongest long-term track records." Of 288 attempted answers, 268 were returned and used to calculate appearance rate; the same 268 answers, filtered to those carrying retrieval evidence, were used to determine which domains actually supplied the citations behind each answer. Every brand's appearance rate is reported alongside a 95% Wilson confidence interval, so two brands with overlapping intervals should not be read as meaningfully separated by this sample.

Which wine brands lead AI answers, and who actually gets cited?

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti led the category at a 36.9% appearance rate, well clear of the next name and statistically distinct from every brand outside the top position. But the more consequential column sits to its right: how often each brand's own website supplied the evidence behind its mentions.

BrandAppearance rateOwned-domain citation rate
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti36.9%0%
Château Lafite Rothschild27.2%1.5%
Château Margaux23.5%1.5%
Penfolds21.6%3%
Screaming Eagle17.9%0%

By comparison, Wine-Searcher — a price-comparison and inventory site, not a producer — posted the highest owned-domain citation rate of any entity in the study, at 19%, more than six times higher than any brand in the table above. The pattern held down the full leaderboard: even brands with respectable mid-tier appearance rates, such as Château Latour and Château Mouton Rothschild, registered owned-domain citation rates under 1%.

Why does the citation gap matter more than the ranking itself?

Appearance rate measures only whether an AI engine named a brand; it says nothing about where the engine obtained its supporting facts. Across this study, that evidence came overwhelmingly from independent, third-party publishers rather than from producers: Wine Enthusiast alone supplied evidence in 35.8% of answers carrying retrieval evidence, ahead of Vinovest (29.9%), VinePair (25.4%), and Forbes (21.3%). Combined, those four publishers accounted for a larger share of the study's citations than every wine producer's own website put together.

That pattern is not specific to wine. Independent industry research analyzing more than 25 million AI-generated citations has found that earned, third-party media accounts for roughly 84% of all AI citations across categories, with brand-owned and paid content registering barely at all. A brand can dominate the appearance metric entirely and still have no meaningful influence over the evidence an AI system attaches to it, which is precisely the position this study found the category's most storied producers occupying.

Where do the engines disagree most sharply?

The study also surfaced substantial engine-specific concentration that any single-platform audit would miss entirely. Gemini named the trading platform Liv-ex in 25 of 67 returned answers — more than a third of the time — while Perplexity and Claude did not name it at all in the measured set. ChatGPT, separately, named Château Latour in 20 of 66 answers, a rate several multiples higher than any other engine recorded for the same brand.

A brand's visibility can look entirely different depending on which single AI platform a team happens to be checking, which is precisely why 5W's methodology tests all four engines in parallel rather than sampling one and extrapolating.

What should wine and spirits brands do about this gap?

Closing it starts with treating tasting notes, vintage data, food-pairing guidance, and scarcity information as material built to be picked up and repeated by an independent, credible source, not simply published once on an owned domain and left there. 5W's Alcohol Marketing & PR practice runs the earned-media programs that build precisely this kind of third-party evidence layer for wine, beer, and spirits brands.

Frequently asked questions

Which wine brand had the highest appearance rate?

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti had the highest measured appearance rate at 36.9% of answers returned, with a 95% confidence interval of 31.4% to 42.9%.

Did the leading brand also lead owned-site citations?

No. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti had a 0% owned-domain citation rate among answers with retrieval evidence. Wine-Searcher had the highest rate among eligible entities, at 19%.

Which publisher appeared most often in cited answers?

Wine Enthusiast appeared in 96 answers with citations — 35.8% of the 268 answers carrying retrieval evidence, the largest share of any single publisher measured in the study.

Do these results measure wine sales or consumer preference?

No. The results measure which brands four AI systems named and which domains they cited for these prompts on a fixed measurement date. The study does not measure sales, consumer preference, or category market share.
