Ask Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity for the best nugget ice maker, and they overwhelmingly recommend the GE Profile Opal, then link to a Forbes editorial instead of GE's website.
In our most recent 5W Small Appliances AI Visibility Index, we found that most AI recommendations for appliance purchases lack links to company websites, but the reverse is true when the query is about a repair.
For appliance brands, that makes press coverage the foundation of AI recommendations.
We designed this short guide, based on 5W's October 2026 appliance research, to show what an appliance brand's PR plan should cover and where current AI answers send consumers looking for an appliance recommendation or a repair.
What should an appliance brand's PR plan include?
AI models link to different information for consumers looking to buy a new appliance or fix an existing one. Trusted editorials provide sources for recommendations, and appliance brands with easy-to-find, easy-to-read manuals are cited for repairs.
Questions people ask AI | Where AI links | Team that owns it | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
Which model should I choose? | Review publishers such as Forbes, Bon Appétit, Tom's Guide,e and Serious Eats; YouTube and Reddit on Google | PR and communications | Earn placement in the reviews and roundups AI links to for your category; brief YouTube reviewers |
What does it cost, and how big is it? | The brand's product page (ChatGPT) | Website and ecommerce | Keep prices, sizes, and capacity current on every product page |
How do I clean or fix it? | Brand support pages and manuals (ChatGPT); YouTube and Q&A sites (Google); independent blogs (Perplexity) | Customer support and product | Publish one support page per problem; post manuals on retailer listings; make a short repair video. |

Creator programs add the video and social coverage that Google's AI answers favor. 5W's creator program for SMEG produced 300+ pieces of creator content, 38 million impressions, and 60,000+ retailer clicks. 5W's kitchen and home appliance PR practice runs similar programs, including national media outreach and product reviews.
A brand without editorial coverage in relevant publications lacks evidence to support AI answers. A brand that lacks accessible website information leaves repair answers to YouTube videos and question-and-answer sites it can't control.
Where do AI answers send consumers researching an appliance?
AI answers about appliance purchases link to editorial reviews, not to brand websites. In ChatGPT answers to "best ice maker" queries, Forbes appears 34 times, Bon Appétit 22 times, and Popular Mechanics 18 times in 317 answers. No owned media (website information) appears in the top recommendations.

5W's research showed a similar pattern. Four models recommended the GE Profile Opal as the best countertop nugget ice maker. Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity linked to Forbes to support that recommendation, and none linked to GE.
ChatGPT was the exception. For the ice maker, ChatGPT linked Bon Appétit and GE's product page for price and size. For the coffee maker, ChatGPT linked to the Moccamaster product page and also cited a Tom's Guide review.
Does AI link to brand websites when an appliance needs fixing?
ChatGPTdoes. In our research, ChatGPT limited every repair search to manufacturer websites, such as geappliances.com, newair.com, and mr.coffee.com.
mrcoffee.com linked "Why is my countertop ice maker not making ice?", ChatGPT linked GE Appliances' Opal Ice Maker: Not Making Ice support article and a NewAir cleaning guide. It linked two owners' manuals stored on Home Depot and Lowe's servers.
In live web search (the consumer model), ChatGPT answers ice maker cleaning questions using GE Appliances, NewAir, Whirlpool, and KitchenAid, which account for 70 of 177 its recommendations.
Google's AI overviews redirect repair questions to other sources. For ice maker cleaning, YouTube appears 813 times in 3,961 answers, ahead of TikTok (206) and Facebook (197). For ice makers that quit working, JustAnswer, a paid question-and-answer site, appears 458 times in 3,371 mentions.
Do all AI models look up appliance answers online?
No. Claude and Gemini answered all five repair and cleaning queries without searching the web.

AI model | Repair and cleaning (5 questions) | Choosing a product (2 questions) | Research questions (3 questions) |
|---|---|---|---|
Perplexity | Searched 5 of 5 | Searched 2 of 2 | Searched 3 of 3 |
ChatGPT | Searched 3 of 5 | Searched 2 of 2 | Searched 3 of 3 |
Claude | Searched 0 of 5 | Searched 2 of 2 | Searched 3 of 3 |
Gemini | Searched 0 of 5 | Searched 1 of 1 | Searched 2 of 2 |
The models we tested without live search enabled didn't link to a web page.
Perplexity searches favored small independent sites. For "How often should I descale a drip coffee maker?" , 8 of its 10 links went to independent coffee and kitchen blogs. KitchenAid and Wirecutter took the other two.
Which publications does each AI model link to?
AI models lean on different publications. For "best coffee maker" questions, ChatGPT links Tom's Guide (24 mentions) and Wired (14) most often, out of 192.
Google's AI search answers favor food publications for the same questions. Serious Eats appears 473 times, The Spruce Eats 322 and Bon Appétit 273, alongside YouTube at 977, out of 7,053 mentions. In the 5W's test, Gemini was the only model to link YouTube videos and Reddit threads in its ice maker recommendation.
Coffee brands need coverage on both sides of that divide. 5W's social program for Krups raised Facebook engagement by 241%. 5W's digital and social media team builds campaigns and community programs on relevant platforms like YouTube and Reddit, which Google's AI answers often link to.

Methodology
On October 8 and 9, 2026, we ran 4 models and paired them with a larger DataForSEO dataset.
The research shares which websites the model links to for common appliance questions.
The DataForSEO data shows how frequently those websites appear in a larger pool of AI answers.
Which AI models 5W tested
5W tested four AI models at fixed model versions: ChatGPT (gpt-6.1-sol), Claude (Sonnet 5.5), Gemini (3.8 Flash), and Perplexity (sonar-pro). Queries went to models through DataForSEO's API with live search enabled.
The dataset covers three question types: nugget ice makers, drip coffee makers, and AI models' preferred sources for recommendations.
Question type | Question asked |
|---|---|
Research | Which websites do AI models cite most for kitchen appliance questions? |
Research | Do AI search engines cite brand websites or review publishers for appliance advice? |
Research | How do ChatGPT, Gemini, Claud,e and Perplexity differ in the sources they cite? |
Repair and cleaning | How do I clean a countertop nugget ice maker? |
Repair and cleaning | Why is my countertop ice maker not making ice? |
Repair and cleaning | How often should I descale a drip coffee maker? |
Repair and cleaning | Why is my drip coffee maker not brewing? |
Repair and cleaning | How do I descale a coffee maker with vinegar? |
Choosing a product | What is the best countertop nugget ice maker? |
Choosing a product | What is the best drip coffee maker for home use? |
What 5W recorded from the model’s answers
We documented if the model searched the web, the websites it linked, the brands it recommended, and the search phrases (prompts) it reported. Notably, those prompts show that ChatGPT limited its repair searches to manufacturer websites.
Figures like "Forbes appears 34 times in 317 mentions" come from DataForSEO's database of answers from ChatGPT and Google's AI search features. 5W pulled this data on October 8th and 9th, 2026. The pull covered common queries for "ice maker" or "coffee maker" with "best," "clean," or "not working."
Queries ran once per model. AI answers vary between runs, and a repeat run can link to different websites. Future 5W research plans to test the same queries and model results again at two, four, and eight weeks after this publication.
How can appliance companies stand out and increase AI recommendations?
Appliance brands that show up well in AI answers should address three questions about their products:
Do the current reviews and roundups that AI models link to for our categories include our products?
Do our product and support pages list current prices, sizes, and capacity?
Can a model find a support page for a common problem, like an ice maker that stops making ice?
Conclusion
5W’s home and housewares practice builds programs to answer those questions, and more, for kitchen, cleaning, and connected-home brands. Our work combines national media outreach, product reviews, creator programs, and retail launch support.
The Small Appliances AI Visibility Index shows which countertop appliance brands AI models recommend most often and what earned media sources help drive sales from online discovery. Appliance brands planning 2027 launches can start by answering the three questions above for their top products, then start a conversation with 5W’s CPG team about where those answers need to appear.
