Edition 1 (provisional). Last updated: October 24, 2026. 5W Research, directed by Ronn Torossian, Founder and Chairman of 5W.

Among 50 selected U.S. undergraduate public relations programs, official catalogs confirm one requirement for a dedicated AI course: Western Kentucky University's PR 385, Artificial Intelligence in Public Relations. Eight programs confirm optional AI courses linked to the degree, and a ninth (Syracuse) is provisional. Two programs confirm AI tied to required coursework. Twelve verification records remain unresolved, so every count is a minimum, not a national estimate.

Summary

  • One confirmed dedicated AI course requirement among 50 selected programs, at Western Kentucky University. Its catalog lists no recent terms offered.
  • Two programs confirm AI tied to required coursework: Western Kentucky and the University of Florida's UF Online degree, through an official AI attribute on MMC 3420. Hofstra is unresolved and not counted.
  • Eight programs confirm an optional AI route through degree or shared-school elective menus. Syracuse's school-level route is a ninth, provisional case and is shown separately.
  • No qualifying explicit AI-search, GEO or AEO instruction was confirmed in the reviewed sources.
  • An actual registrar section for an AI-topic course was captured only for Maryland's COMM 449A.

What did the audit confirm about AI in PR degrees?

Among 50 selected programs, 11 (22%) have confirmed current official evidence of AI linked to the audited degree, one more (Syracuse) is provisional, and one (2%) has a confirmed dedicated AI course requirement.

These categories overlap, and every share uses 50 as the denominator. Provisional means the record counts only through a school-level elective rule that was not verified for PR majors, so it is excluded from confirmed totals and shares. The numbers are documented minimums in a purposive sample, not national estimates, and they stay provisional until the 23 baseline-only records are rechecked and the unresolved records are resolved. Older or mixed-year evidence at Brigham Young and Drake, and a conditional topic reference at DePaul, are not counted.

Table 5 in the appendix lists all 50 records with degree names, catalog editions, course roles, retrieval outcomes, capture dates and official source links.

Which program has a confirmed dedicated AI course requirement?

Western Kentucky University is the only program among the 50 with a confirmed dedicated AI course requirement. The finding is limited to confirmed records, because 12 remain unresolved.

The Western Kentucky PR degree requirements list PR 385, Artificial Intelligence in Public Relations, as required for the PR concentration. The advertising concentration treats the course differently. The course record's recent-terms field reads None, which does not show the course is currently unscheduled, and a catalog requirement does not show that any cohort has taken it.

One other program confirms AI tied to required coursework, and one more candidate is unresolved. At the University of Florida, required MMC 3420, Consumer and Audience Analytics, carries an official Artificial Intelligence attribute in the UF Online PR degree. That is an AI connection, not a standalone AI course, and it does not measure how much AI is taught. At Hofstra, earlier records linked AI wording in required PR 100 to the degree, but the wording and the required linkage could not be rechecked, so Hofstra is unresolved and not counted.

Which programs document optional AI courses?

Eight programs confirm an optional AI course or route tied to the degree, and a ninth, Syracuse, is provisional. None of those courses is required, and the scope differs by school.

SyracuseMMI 345 and MMI 435School-level route through the PR degree's Newhouse elective ruleProvisional

Syracuse's PR degree permits three credits of any Newhouse coursework. MMI 345 and MMI 435 are catalog-listed Newhouse courses with explicit generative AI wording, so they support an optional school-level route in principle. They are not required PR courses, and Syracuse is kept out of the confirmed totals. The required PRL 320 and PRL 376 descriptions do not name AI.

Syracuse student eligibility, enrollment and current sections were not verified. The separate AI and Emerging Media Minor is excluded, and whether PR majors may take it was not established. An earlier-reported spring 2026 AI-in-PR course has no verified official PRL code and is not counted. Catalog availability does not guarantee a seat, because prerequisites, class standing and scheduling still apply.

What do the scheduling records show?

Only one AI-topic course has a confirmed registrar section: Maryland's COMM 449A. Florida and Quinnipiac have faculty teaching records, which are weaker evidence than a registrar section, and the remaining AI courses have only catalog listings.

Western Kentucky, PR 385Catalog field: no recent terms offeredDoes not show the course is unscheduled now, or cancelled

No qualifying current section was captured for any other AI course. A recurring-offering note in a catalog does not establish a particular term's section.

Did the audit find AI search, GEO or AEO instruction?

No qualifying explicit AI-search, GEO or AEO instruction was confirmed in the reviewed sources. Ordinary SEO references did not qualify.

This is a documentation finding for the reviewed records. It cannot show that no program teaches AI search under another course title, in an assignment or in an unpublished syllabus, and 12 records remain unresolved. Readers who want the terms defined can use the 5W glossary entry on generative engine optimization, and the GEO Reckoning report covers how AI answer engines changed brand discovery. 5W's GEO practice works on how AI platforms retrieve and cite brands.

What remains unresolved, and what are the limits?

Twelve verification records are unresolved and 23 records were not rechecked, so every count here is a minimum. The unresolved records are not all schools whose catalogs were entirely inaccessible, and Table 5 shows each retrieval outcome individually.

Eleven records have no retrieved current requirement list: Memphis, Radford, Illinois State, Central Missouri, Samford, Georgia Southern, Morgan State, Central Oklahoma, Chapman, Tennessee and San Diego State. Most returned access errors, and Illinois State's page shows internal IDs instead of course names. Central Oklahoma's current catalog lists the degree as Advertising and Public Relations, BA, a different title from the earlier record. San Diego State has a course titled Artificial Intelligence and Strategic Decision Making, but its link to the PR emphasis is not established.

At Hofstra, PR 100 and a Fall 2026 section were captured, but the AI wording and required linkage were not rechecked. At Fullerton, the current pathway map was captured and its course-description review is incomplete. The map lists PHIL 322, Ethics, Artificial Intelligence and Robots, as a general-education option, which is not counted as PR coursework.

  • Twenty-three programs keep earlier observations, mostly "not documented." That is not proof AI is not taught.
  • Catalog descriptions can lag practice, omit embedded modules or list courses that are not scheduled.
  • The sample is purposive, so the figures do not estimate how many American PR programs teach AI.
  • No independent second coder was used.
  • The audit measures published documentation. It cannot assess instruction quality, student participation or graduate competence.

What does 5W recommend? (Recommendations, not findings)

The four recommendations below are 5W's views. The audit does not test whether they would improve outcomes.

  1. Publish a curriculum map that shows which AI outcomes are required, which courses are optional, what ethics expectations apply and when each course is next scheduled.
  2. State when each listed AI course runs, so a catalog entry is not mistaken for a section.
  3. Consider AI in a required course. Catalog evidence ties AI to required coursework in few of the audited programs, and an embedded unit reaches every student in a way an elective cannot.
  4. Consider explicit AI-search coverage. If a program teaches AI search, GEO or AEO, naming it in a course description makes it documentable.

For students, the most useful facts are a course number, its role in the degree and the term it runs. For employers, these records can inform interview questions. They cannot rank graduates or show what any individual studied.

Frequently asked questions

Do any PR programs require a dedicated AI course?

One confirmed requirement was found among 50 selected programs: Western Kentucky University requires PR 385, Artificial Intelligence in Public Relations, in its PR concentration. Twelve records remain unresolved, so this is a confirmed minimum, not a count of all U.S. programs.

How many PR programs document optional AI courses?

Eight of the 50 confirm an optional AI route through degree or shared-school elective menus. Syracuse is a ninth, provisional case through a school-level elective rule, and it is not included in the confirmed count.

Does this audit show that PR schools are not teaching AI?

No. The audit counts only what official catalogs document, in a purposive sample. A catalog that does not mention AI may describe a course in which AI is taught, and 12 records are unresolved.

Did the audit find AI search or GEO instruction?

No qualifying explicit AI-search, GEO or AEO instruction was confirmed in the reviewed sources. That is a documentation finding, not proof that none exists.

Is an AI minor the same as a PR degree requirement?

No. Campus AI minors, such as Syracuse's AI and Emerging Media Minor, are separate programs with their own eligibility rules and are not counted as requirements of the PR degree.

How can students check a program's AI offerings?

Ask for the course number, its role in the degree (required, option or free elective) and the term it is next scheduled, then check the registrar's schedule. A catalog listing is not a scheduled section.

How was the audit done?

The audit reviewed one undergraduate PR degree or named PR pathway at each of 50 universities, using official catalogs, degree plans, course descriptions and schedules.

The sample is purposive and fixed at 50, drawn from education coverage, the PRSA certification program list and official program pages. It is not a ranking, a random draw or a census. Only official sources count as evidence: news, minors, faculty research and earlier coverage can point to a course but cannot establish a requirement. Dedicated required courses, AI in required courses, optional courses, general-education options and general program references are kept separate, and generative AI and AI ethics count only when named explicitly.

Twenty-seven records were rechecked on October 24, 2026. Successful captures and unresolved retrievals are identified individually in Table 5. The other 23 records keep earlier observations. Ronn Torossian, Founder and Chairman of 5W, directed the research, which used AI-assisted web retrieval and coding. No surveys, paid datasets or university interviews were used.

5W published a broader study of PR and marketing education in April 2026. It is context only: this audit is a separate catalog review and does not test or validate that study's conclusions. Related 5W research includes the AI Higher Education Index and the AI Business School Index, and more studies are on the 5W research page.

Where are the methodology, sources and dataset?

This appendix lists the coding rules, the full 50-record dataset, the official sources behind each confirmed finding and the items still awaiting verification. Capture dates and retrieval outcomes are shown per record in Table 5, and a changed URL is not a curriculum change.
