Sidwell families include senators, cabinet members, intelligence officials, and the senior staff of agencies that fund and regulate artificial intelligence. That proximity produces the strongest AI-ethics curriculum in this index: students engage with AI governance, algorithmic bias, surveillance, deepfakes, and societal impact as graded coursework. No peer matches this.

The school's AI investment is faculty-driven rather than governance-mandated — which produces authentic classroom integration but slower institutional scaling.

Tier C — What $50,000 Doesn't Buy
Twelve schools — from Georgetown Visitation (58.6) to St. John's College High School (45.8) — score below 60 on AI curriculum depth. None names AI in a course title. None has a dedicated AI faculty hire. None partners with a university AI lab or AI company in a formalized curriculum-extension arrangement. Most charge between $22,000 and $50,000 per year.
BASIS Independent McLean (55.4) is the Tier C outlier — highest Curriculum score (60) in the tier, driven by the BASIS charter network's nationally standardized STEM model. But Integration (48) is the lowest score in its profile: AI at BASIS McLean is siloed inside STEM courses, not embedded across disciplines. Network-model depth without school-level breadth.
Gonzaga College High School (57.2) scores well on Curriculum (62) — Jesuit intellectual rigor produces real CS coursework. But Partnerships (54) and Recency (56) reflect a school that has not yet made the post-ChatGPT structural investment that Tier B peers have committed to.
The remaining schools — from The Field School (55.8) to St. John's College High School (45.8) — represent the structural baseline. These are schools that teach computer science, offer AP courses, and run robotics clubs. They do not yet teach artificial intelligence as a named, measured, sequenced discipline.
What Would Change the Scores
The gap between Tier B and Tier A is not budget. It is naming. The schools that score highest name AI explicitly — in course titles, in strategic plans, in institutional messaging. The schools that score lower describe "innovation," "technology," and "STEM." The difference is structural: when a school names AI, it creates a measurable curriculum commitment. When it uses generic language, AI remains optional.
Three moves would shift the rankings within one academic cycle:
1. Name the discipline. Replace "technology" and "innovation" with "artificial intelligence" in course titles and program descriptions. Naming creates accountability.
2. Hire an AI-specific faculty role. Not a CS teacher who also covers AI. A hire whose job title includes "artificial intelligence." One dedicated role changes the institutional signal.
3. Formalize a university or industry AI partnership. A structured curriculum-extension arrangement with a university AI lab, a frontier AI company, or a research institution. Not a field trip. Not a speaker series. A formalized, multi-year partnership that extends what the school can teach beyond its campus.
Methodology
5W AI Communications has published more than 100 AI visibility, citation-share, and production-capacity studies across the education, consumer, healthcare, and enterprise sectors. This index applies the same five-dimension framework used across the 5W AI education research franchise.
Dimension 1 — Curriculum Depth (25%): Does the school offer named AI courses? How many? At what level? Is there vertical sequencing from introductory to advanced? A school with "AP Computer Science" scores lower than a school with "AP Computer Science: Artificial Intelligence." Named AI electives, AI-integrated capstone projects, and dedicated AI course tracks all contribute.
Dimension 2 — Specificity (25%): Does the school name AI specifically — or hide it inside generic "STEM," "innovation," and "future-ready" language? Naming the discipline matters. A school that says "we teach artificial intelligence" scores higher than one that says "we do STEM." Course catalogs, program descriptions, and institutional messaging are all scored.
Dimension 3 — Integration (20%): Is AI taught only in the CS department — or does it appear in humanities, ethics, social science, art, and cross-disciplinary programs? Schools that embed AI across departments score higher than those that silo it. Ethics-of-AI coursework, AI-in-history seminars, and cross-disciplinary AI projects all contribute.
Dimension 4 — Recency (15%): How recently was the AI curriculum adopted or expanded? Schools that invested post-ChatGPT (late 2022 onward) with structured programs score higher than those running pre-2022 CS curricula without AI-specific updates. Recency rewards velocity, not legacy.
Dimension 5 — Partnerships (15%): Does the school partner with universities, AI labs, or AI companies to extend its curriculum? Faculty-training partnerships score higher than field trips. Formalized research collaborations score higher than speaker series. Multi-year structural arrangements score higher than one-off events.
AI Index = (Curriculum Depth × 0.25) + (Specificity × 0.25) + (Integration × 0.20) + (Recency × 0.15) + (Partnerships × 0.15).
